So I decided to time warp back to the 1980s for the ultimate #tweenboy double feature. ▫️ In truth, BOTH of these movies were profoundly influential over the Junior High version of me. Gremlins affirmed to me that those of us with weird imaginations can still exist and thrive as adults, innovating and creating weird things that others will actually value even when they’re not that fancy. Goonies taught me that there is no plot without character. It’s odd to think such a trashy, corny flick would crack open my natural #storyteller mind and trigger me to master an understanding of how intimate motivations drive a #character through a #plot. Both were revelations, wrapped in schlock and garbage. Seeing them back to back (even though I dozed a little) was a surreal and brilliant treat. My swooning was heightened further by the environment. When I was a boy, one cloudy night my whole family piled into a car and drove from our place in #WestDennis to the #Wellfleet #driveinmovie to see the ORIGINAL release of E.T. Hands down one of my all time most cherished family memories (in spite of also being double featured with Continental Divide. Don’t bother looking it up.) I sat mesmerized, crammed in the middle of the front seat, fascinated by both the idea of watching a movie in a car as well as feeling safe and snug and connected during something so #alien. Every time I go to the @wellfleetdrive_in, that memory is evoked, and I get giddy and reminiscent. So witnessing this IMPOSSIBLE marquee caused instantaneous squeals and giggling to leap from me. I was transformed; reverted to the precocious 9 year old, or the awkwardly bizarre 13 year old of my past. I am a Goonie, and definitely a Gremlin.
