Mail Pouch Tobacco Barns were painted with advertisements for Mail Pouch Tobacco, beginning in the early 1900s and continuing through the 1960's. At its peak, the campaign encompassed 20,000 barns across New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and California. Farmers were paid $1 to $2 per year for the rights to advertise on their barn. More than the money, the farmers liked the fact that their barns were getting a fresh coat of paint, which helped preserve the wood. While on our trek in West Virginia, @k.wilkinsonphotography and I went in search of a few of these barns. We found a few, but this one was by far the most photogenic. The fall foliage behind the barn added a great splash of color as we photographed this piece of Americana.
