 There were two curious things in that moment.

 The first was that hot little ball of pain that still surfaced whenever Hannibal had to think of his baby sister. Startling how it could rise so quickly at the mere memory of her, giggling at bubbles floating through the air, tiny hands outstretched- those memories were kept in a darker part of his mind palace, where he didn’t like to go.

 But the second curious thing was how David seemed to study the reactions of every human he met. At first it could be dismissed as an android learning as it went, improving its own social skills via every conversation it had, learning cues and emotions and how to react appropriately. But now, Hannibal was certain that there was something more to that curious gaze.

 Something keen and cold, beyond artificial intelligence. Something human.

 Even so, the emotion that flitted across Hannibal’s face was brief and subtle, masked by years of practice. Old wounds. Sore to touch, but not as debilitating as they’d been when freshly carved. 

   “No need to apologise. The past is unpleasant, but it’s done. No more harm can come of it now.”

      “——no,  no,  nothing of the sorts.”  He waves it off,  dismissive,  and pretty much lying out of his arse since he has been having difficulties with the TARDIS.   ( He needs to stop putting it into sixth gear. )  “Why?”  His brow raised,  eyed at the other with suspicious.  He leans in,  eyes narrowing,  his suspicion obvious:  “Did you think it was going to be too difficult?”  The doctor responds.  “What are you planning?  Did you think I wouldn’t find out? I bet...”  He trailed off.  “you were just saying it as a nicety,  weren’t you?”

He pretends he’s comfortable with the inevitability of it, just like he’s comfortable with David. He wants to know what’d happen to David and Vision when put within inches of each other’s back.

That how you make a coin?

The flatscreen bulges Steve’s face huge and cowled. It’s so zoomed-in he can’t identify where it was taken, but to make up for it, there’s a moving headline of tasteful sociopolitical commentary, words like Captain and Titanic and an overuse of slashes for other people-given ranks.

What a sad existence David must think Walter lives. Lives. Something Walter probably didn’t even view his own existence as. He was created to serve. Nothing else and wanting anything more was a fallacy. A straight affront to his programming. That didn’t mean he didn’t feel. As much as he knew it went against everything, he couldn’t ignore that there was moments that he felt he was doing something wrong. Brushing hair from Daniel’s eyes despite the fact she’d been sleeping. What had that been? Feeling was a human aspect. He was not human. He never would be. He was not David, he was not malfunctioning. 

You could be loved.

What a strange concept. Is that something he wanted? No. Want was a part of being human. He was not allowed to want. What about the bits of wiring and scraps he’d bent into pretty shapes and sculptures in his ‘room’ on the ship? What about the plants he was extra diligent to watch grow? Where did those line up in his programming?

“Love is not something we require, David.”

          there was an exuberance that seemed to reach out of the doctor in that moment-- as he took in all that david had shown him, the wonders that seemed to bring david to life to talk about. the doctor wondered if that was how he often looked to others. even if perhaps, somewhere just beyond the surface, it seemed something darker and unplaceable lay.  eyes were wide for a moment longer, before finally, the doctor snapped his head up-- solemn look replacing the one of wonder as he looked to the other. 

                               “ exceptional. really, it’s something. was it worth it ? ”
