Whaleback Light, Kittery. In 1886 waves from a powerful storm broke the windows, and water poured into the lighthouse. Keeper Leander White used a blanket to signal for help.
Today on Maine Calling (Maine Public Radio at 11am), a special on Maine's Lighthouses! And tonight (Sept 4th) at 8:00 on Maine Public Television, the premier episode of, Safe Harbors: Lighthouses of Maine. Yay!
Last night’s Nearly Full (98.3%) Buck Moon rising behind Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery, Maine — photographed from the shore in New Castle, NH. A thin band of haze on the horizon gave the moon a deep red glow for just a few moments as it lined up perfectly with the lighthouse beacon.
In the foreground is Buoy 2KR, a red navigation buoy marking the entrance to the Piscataqua River channel. Known for its distinctive “groaner” sound and its position in one of the fastest tidal currents on the East Coast, 2KR is a familiar landmark to local mariners — and last night, it was perfectly aligned with the moon’s reflection. One of those rare moments where everything just clicked.
