Whaleback Light, Kittery. In 1886 waves from a powerful storm broke the windows, and water poured into the lighthouse. Keeper Leander White used a blanket to signal for help.
Today on Maine Calling (Maine Public Radio at 11am), a special on Maine's Lighthouses! And tonight (Sept 4th) at 8:00 on Maine Public Television, the premier episode of, Safe Harbors: Lighthouses of Maine. Yay!
From 1948 to 1976, Hazel and Clayton Sinclair ran the Rock Rest Resort. It was one of many Black-owned and -operated businesses that thrived nationwide during the post-war years until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination in public accommodations. Today, Rock Rest still exists as a private residence. Located in Kittery, Maine. Source

Here are my photos from Kittery Block Party back in June! The weather was surprisingly cool for mid-June in Maine; I had to wear long pants and even a light jacket at times. I expected it to be breezy, since Kittery is on the coast, but at times gusts broke through, knocking my prints around and even shaking the tent once or twice! Thankfully my tent has weights. To my surprise, it was the only tent I saw with weights attached. Some outdoor events require tents to have weights. My husband joined me mid-day, and we spent the rest of the day together.
Another interesting note about Kittery Block Party is that it has the shortest drive of any event I’ve attended in my years of selling artwork in person. From where I lived at the time, it was about a 10-15 minute drive.
