Blue Hill Bay Light, Green Island, Brooklin, Maine. Two cows were kept on next door Flye Island, so that keeper, Roscoe Chandler had a steady supply of milk to help with his ulcers. The cows could walk between the islands at low tide. Occasionally they got spooked by thunderstorms, would start swimming into the bay, and have to be herded back to their island by boat.
Boon Island Light, York, Maine. The two keepers stationed at Boon Island in 1978 had to be rescued by helicopter, after a terrible storm rose the water five feet above the base of the tower and dislodged pieces stone. The storm destroyed all the other buildings on the island, and forced the into the men into the light chamber so they wouldn't be swept away. After that, New England's tallest lighthouse (133 ft.) became automated.
Whitehead Light, Whitehead Island, St. George, Maine. In 1885, Jack the donkey was brought to the island to haul coal from the landing to the lighthouse. Described as fat as butter and gentle as a child, a picturesque feature of the landscape.
