A few words from some fast fashion posts this morning. Hold up. Didn’t you post a black square in the summer? Because there is no hashtag attached to the US Capitol does it make it unsharable? After watching the news last night I am heartbroken, but not surprised. This is a moment for you to acknowledge what has happened, & more importantly educate yourself, your peers and use this time to reflect. Sharing these important words below. This was not a protest, it was terrorism. Fashion is political. Your silence is oppression. R E C Y C L E D I S T H E B R A N D N E W The #Recycled Triangle Top & Recycled Seamless High Waisted Thongs. Made by me (Tiffany) in #England. I cut, sew, wrap (and all the in between) for your garments! I hope you enjoyed seeing an insight into this on my #stories today. A little about the word “Recycled”. For my swim collection, recycled refers to the fabrics being made with materials such as industrial plastics, carpets and fishing nets. On Instagram you will see many quotes such as “swimwear made with fishing nets”. Here is the real deal. So if it is advertised a garment is made with “Fishing nets” for example, it’s important to check out the other elements in the garment. Unfortunately even with sustainable at its prime, we will never find a swimsuit made with 100% fishing nets, unless it is a fishing net of course, but that’d be a bit hole-y. Ok back to checking the other elements in a garment. If you’re ever unsure just ask! If there’s something a bit fishy🐟 (sorry couldn’t resist) trust your instinct. All labels should read to be 100% and include all fabrics included. Example : cotton 43% elastane 57% Lining :100% cotton I get lots of questions and am not shy of being 100% transparent with you and this is on all labels for my garments that I iron in individually for you 💚 My swimwear collection is made with 78% Carpets, Industrial plastics and Fishing nets & 22% Lycra. The fishing nets are recovered by oceans by volunteers, and the industrial plastics & carpets are saved from filling our landfills. The waste materials are made to form a yarn, the yarn is the same quality as virgin yarn so, why buy brand new? G R E E N W A S H I N G Do you think #FastFashion has slowed down over the years? If so how? I don’t think fast fashion has slowed down over the years. Fast fashion will never slow down for as long as there is consumers buying fast fashion. The impact of social media influencers is only increasing sales for fast fashion brands in the 21st century and the cycle is only getting faster. Fast fashion in a sense of “sustainable” fast fashion is currently at its peak and now the education is to move on to what green washing means and how to find the correct technique to teach this to the consumer. Greenwashing : Greenwashing is the process of conveying a false impression or providing misleading information about how a company's products are more environmentally friendly. Greenwashing is considered an unsubstantiated claim to deceive consumers into believing that a company's products are environmentally friendly. Example : H&M selling a “conscious” Linen Blend Dress. Linen is deemed earth friendly because it can endure 20 years of wear and is comfortable and flexible. The flax plant does not require much energy or water resources to produce and the entire plant used to make linen, leaving no waste footprint. Linen clothing is naturally biodegradable and recyclable. The fabrics in the H&M dress include : Compositions (The fabrics used) Shell : Linen 55%, Cotton 45% Lining: Cotton 100% This means the dress is only 0.275% Linen. Imagine being given a plant based meal, but it was only 0.275% plant based, and the other 3 quarters was in fact meat? Sorry, bad example but seriously?! I found this example by just searching on H&M website. How awful that they sprung to mind as soon as I typed the word “Greenwashing” I searched first for “organic cotton” nothing was found. Then I searched “sustainable” and this dress was found. Another dress in the conscious collection was a dress made with 100% polyester but claims it is mixed with Recycled Polyester in the title, but the compositions are 100% polyester? Today is the 7 year anniversary of 1,134 lives that were taken when a building in Bangladesh called the Rana Plaza, collapsed. Most of the victims were women and children, women like you and me. They were making clothes that contribute to retail stores who have names like, @primark @mango @matalan @walmart Inditex (parent company of @zara) This was not a workplace, it was a death trap. In the days before the collapse there were cracks in the wall, but garment workers were forced to continue to work, even when the bottom floor of the building was closed before of the unsafe environment. Not only were they forced, it was fear, garment deadlines must be reached and they must be over-worked to reach them. This post is to remember those who are no longer with us, sacrificing there life for clothing that both you and me might have in our wardrobes. I have made a small change in my consumer habits and that small change will lead to big impacts. All I ask is that you do the same, ask the question #WhoMadeMyClothes to fashion brands and take small steps to become a conscious consumer, ask yourself, do I REALLY need this? And if the answer is yes, find your garment ethically.
