Hi Grace, I am new to all this running idea and I have just been running for a week. I am running to lose some weight and be fit. Can you give any advice about how many times ı should run in a week or how long my runs should as a beginner etc? Thank a lot and ou have an amazing blog :))
Yeah definitely!! Ok, so at the beginning you don’t want to overdo it. (When beginners set a goal of running every single day, many get demotivated and give up after just 1 week) So, start small and work your way up!
For the first month, aim to run 2 to 4 times per week. Make your goal a range like that, and not a definite number, so that you know you have the freedom but also can feel extra proud when you run towards the top of your range.
Put up a tally (in sticky notes on your door frame, so you’ll see them every time you enter/exit the room and be reminded; or in tally marks drawn in Expo marker on your mirror) to motivate yourself. Write 1 tally (or pull 1 sticky note) for every run that you do. Maybe write your goal up there, too, like “8 to 16 runs for August" and check it off when you reach the lower parameter of the goal range. This type of thing can be highly motivating, to make sure you keep on coming back for another run!
Regarding how long your runs should be, again, set yourself a range — say, 20-40 minutes for the first few weeks. Make a playlist of songs that total the lower parameter of your range in minutes. That way, you’ll know that when the playlist is nearing its end, you’re almost done; and when it finishes, your 20 (or however many) minutes are up! This is much better than constantly checking your watch or the time on your phone, as that can be rather discouraging ("ugh, 15 minutes left? …UGH, 14?? Didn’t 10 minutes pass since I last checked??")
If you have a smartphone, I suggest downloading the app "Zombies, Run!" to give your runs an innovative, awesome fun spin. It costs I think $7, but it is SO WORTH IT! It’s like a radio in your ear that plays episodes of zombies chasing you and so forth. The sound is very well situated for the earbuds so it sounds like they’re coming at you from different sides, further away and getting closer, stampeding at you, etc. - it sounds so real! (I gotta turn my head and double check that nobody’s actually following me, rustling in the leaves, and that it’s just my zombies hahaha) It’s like being in your own episode of the Walking Dead. Very fun, motivating way to get through your runs :)
Finally, adjust and increase these goal ranges as time progresses. After the first month, increase each range by 1-2 times (for times per week) and 10-15 minutes (for how long a run). Continue increasing with each successive month until you’re at a place you feel good at! It’s up to you to know what limits you want to push yourself too - don’t be afraid to dare yourself for a challenge. Remember: the change is in the challenge.
Anyway, yeah! Sorry if that’s more than what you wanted haha, those are just some things I really needed myself as a beginner to motivate myself through it. :) More links/resources for beginning runners here you can check out!
