So Wednesday went into the city to adventure with Thelma and all we did was drink and wander. I never had been on a train (at least one that went somewhere) so we took the train in and as soon as we got on the platform Thelma told me “don’t fall off.” I don’t think I’m that clumsy but according to her “yes. You are.”
Once we got in, we were talking about how most places I found to go to were super far away so we weren’t going to walk that and neither of us are good with subways even though we’ve been in the city 100 times…. so after a drink we decide to “adventure” by jumping on the first subway that came in. Ironically, the one we got went some place she’s never been and I’ve been to once: Coney Island.
So the subway wasn’t all too crazy, well at least for a subway… But once we were about two stops away from Coney Island I decided we should get off- mostly because there was one guy who kept looking at us and smiling which we deemed was probably just his face but I’ve been a ball of nerves lately so we walked a short distance to get to the pier- It wasn’t any big deal. Except for we were taking pictures and making jokes when my phone died. Super great. And Thelma needed to pee, again… We searched the pier for an open bathroom and just when things started to look like we weren’t going to have any luck, there it was. Our omen. We found a nice bathroom with outlets. So we went in and I charged my phone (only to have us leave shortly after and kill it again because I’m impatient and wanted to take pictures…). We were there for a little while trying to get at least a decent charge on my phone when the maintenance guy went to come in and saw us. I went to unplug my phone and we went to leave but the guy was like “naw man it’s cool! Keep charging your phone, I’m just gonna start to work on closing up. But you don’t have to rush!” Thus, this is going to be our year because this isn’t something that happens to us often. Usually, it’s nothing goes too horribly but it’s not that lucky.
So we went on, someone was playing a life’s soundtrack- which was amazing!- someone had dogs which the one decided to use the pier as a bathroom and the guy looked at us and just went “she ain’t got no manners!” Once we reached the end rather than going back the way we came, we went off the pier and walked around…. At night. So that ball of nerves wasn’t exactly what we needed but nothing happened except that there was an ice cream truck driving around playing music… Totally creepy but not too bad.
We took the subway- which was we got minor-ly lost looking for- and went back up to Times Square. The plan was to get drinks and dinner and then get the train back, and wander on the way there. But there were these guys doing flips and a whole show so we stopped and watched. we ended up being in like the front and had the most hilarious girls around us. When the guys were making jokes and hyping everyone up and then did nothing these girls were having a running commentary about them being all hype and nothing more. But then they’d flip over someone and they were almost having heart attacks with us. Then there was this weedman. I can only describe him as such because literally the man was dressed in a suit of green with weed leaf designs, weed glasses, hat, and then he had a voice changer which he used to his on the girls to the right of us and then Thelma. Somehow this little street performance became a major part of the night. After we got a few rounds of drinks and pizza and then we had to get pictures on the stairs so because my phone was the only one charged at this point (the restaurant we went to had charging boxes which were totally amazing btw) so I got to take these pictures. We went back to the train station and it was starting to look more like we were going to have a calm ride back. Nope. Drunk mom talking to a drunk dude that we close to our age made the ride.
So like they were talking so loudly and were like right across from us. This wasn’t on purpose, and we weren’t making fun of them. They gave us topics to riff off of, and we were laughing because we’ve honestly done that ourselves. So it wasn’t to be mean. They were talking about astrology signs. Which we talk about all the time- and the way that nature affects people- what got us was she tried to guess his sign. She went “You’re totally a water sign, aren’t you!” “No!” “Then earth. You have to an earth sign.” “The fuck is that? No! I’m an Aries! Duh!” “I knew it! I knew you were a fire sign! I got it like right away!” So cut to me and Thelma looking at each other trying not to laugh. Everything about them made it so funny. The slurring, the disgust he had, and then her claiming she knew it right away. It was a show. From her trying to set him up with her 18 year old daughter, saying he was just too you for her, the sign conversation, advice on him quitting his job for another, the “You’re so sweet” “no, I’m really not” “but you have such a big heart! You’re sooooo sweet” “thank you but I don’t think I really am” conversations… Yes multiple. And then he was complaining about his girlfriend- nothing actually bad just normal complaints- and she told him he should dump her and things like that, it was just a ride. Once he got off- apparently they didn’t know each other before the train station!- she fell asleep and then there were moments… Like when we started to go backwards at 1 in the morning. Then we had to move to a different cart for our station, and finally got to get in the car and get home. I didn’t get home until 2:30, Thelma only had like an hour of sleep before we left and I was up at 6 so we were both tired and ready to sleep forever.
Ignoring the cat-calls (which at this point usually one or the other doesn’t notice them so they’re pretty irrelevant unless it’s something truly out there) it was a pretty exciting trip. Next time though, we’re actually going to Greenwich because we can figure the subway out for that.
