A caixinha é adorável, pequenina e quase irreal.

On a shelf by my bedroom’s entrance I keep a set of objects that occupy a different place in their physical and emotional space. Together, they become an altar, where all these objects gain in their immediate moment or along the time, an affectionate value very important in my life. This altar, as I call it, has a very specific purpose in my inmost, through it I identify people, moments, experiences and reflections of my moods, which builds up a feeling of protection and caring.
In the difficulty of it and in the mix of sensations and feelings, I chose an object which I believe makes sense in all that I have been thinking about and have been identifying in my investigations and art practice. A tiny box of matches of an orangy yellow colour, with a simple drawing of a little man similar to a stickman on its cover, in its inside there are matches as small as the box itself. Some of these are joined into pairs, as if it was not possible to break them in two because of their unusual size. The box is small, sweet and almost surreal. In my small hand it occupies close to the space of a distal phalanx. It was given to me by Pedro who is very special to me, in a time we struggled to communicate and had a fear to express what we felt for each other. This object becomes special for that moment.
I have been thinking a lot about how gestures are a current thing in our lives, and how, at times, we don’t fully appreciate them because of their banality. I believe a lot in a communication that overcomes its formal limits, I believe in a communication through gestures and the exchange of looks, through acts which dissimulate words and that are deciphered through the understanding we have between each other. On that day, an insecurity and confusion surrounded and smothered my spirit, but in the moment Pedro gave me this box it confirmed how he thought of me when he found it, which helped me understand how that gesture was an act of realisation and solidarity to the frustrations I was feeling.
The memory I have when I hold and look at this object is of that gesture, to which I feel eternally grateful for the joy and kindness it brought me that day, and beyond all for the perception that Pedro and I felt the same way and that we equally found each other in the banalities of our everyday.
It is hard for me to imagine what future this and all the objects filling my altar will have. At home, they change from place to place, but they are my companions in every moment and their agglomeration grows every time. Maybe slowly, I will realise and start to understand their value in my inner self, the box of matches has now a much more conscious place on my shelf. Maybe slowly, I will realise and try to write about each one of them so that, maybe, one day they will become an inheritance or will get lost on the way. But their importance and their value in my life will perpetuate in writings, photographs, and stories that will pass by word of mouth.
