You always have incredible success with this so I have to ask, do you have any special techniques for using Sakura gelly rolls? Whenever I use my white to try and outline it either comes out as gray or clumpy looking, even though I regularly use them, and it's incredibly frustrating.

ohhh no i definitely don’t always have success with mine either!! all gelpens are this way, it’s not just you! it’s a matter of practice, persistence, and trail and error! there could be a dozen reasons why your gelly isn’t cooperating, so here’s some stuff i check:

Sometimes both very old and very new gellies can be clumpy and fussy. Sometimes just leaving them sitting for a while can make them fussy. Sometimes using them too much will make them fussy, laughs! Before i draw with it, i test it on the side of the paper or in an inconspicuous spot on my drawing to make sure it’s both 1) clean and 2) flowing smoothly.

also, while they are one of the more opaque white gelpens i’ve used, it can and will sponge up some of the color below, especially if it’s alcohol markers, and especially if it’s still slightly wet. you can use this to your advantage sometimes, but if you go in prepared it’s much less upsetting when it does happen.

A *lot* of errors i make i usually edit out in photoshop, tbh. Touchups are not cheating! since i’m showing you guys raw photos, you can spot plenty of times the gelly doesn’t fully cover a bad line, or becomes turn gray due to the black micron underneath. sometimes I can get away with adding opacity if i go over it again after it’s dry, but it also risks scraping up the white gelpen ink entirely, so you have to be careful.

also, gellys- and most gelpens- hate to be angled at anything except 90 degrees. 45 maaaaaybe on a good day... but i can’t sit  in my chair like a hobgoblin when i use them most the time, they simply won’t flow for me for long. there are also certain textures it will refuse to write on, so you have to experiment with that as well as you go.

you could also experiment with other brands if sakuras are really giving you a hard time- check out uniball’s signo white, for example. (I’d really like to get my hands on one to try out myself!) i'd avoid spending a lot on mystery brands, because they can be very hit or miss *stares sadly at the ranger white gelpen i bought at micheals once* oh, on that note- depending on its age or the pack it came in, it’s possible you just got a really fussy pen. i like to swap between mine so they’re all getting used/flowing regularly. scribbling furiously, cleaning the tip, or running it under warm water for a few minutes may also help smooth out the consistency.

the rest is just stubborn persistence. i hope this helps you conquer that pesky pen!!
