Mentors. Friends,enemies or frenemies?

In the past, I used to think, that mentors are those who talk kindly to you and under no circumstance are they trying to frustrate or hurt you. After watching Whiplash, I believe, that the best learned lessons are the ones served as harsh as possible, by not the very kindest of people. Therefore, is a mentor the good guy or the bad guy in our life? Is he or she the person who encourages you every step of the way, or on the contrary, the one that kicks you in the ass and helps you wake up and eventually grow, be the person, which you were supposed to be? I assume the latter. What do you think?
