Oscar Party Weekend - 2015 Oscars Poster
My brother has been throwing an Oscar Viewing Party for longer than I can remember (at least since the early 90s when he moved to Chicago), either at his home, or at his restaurant. Since 2005 I have been gifting him with a large Oscar poster of that year’s nominees.
Me and my little brother Tom first watched the entire Oscar broadcast back in 1973 (I was 11 and he was 9). We had just seen ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ and were excited to see one of the actresses nominated, and several special effects awards and somehow managed to win “Best Song” that year for “There’s Got to Be a Morning After”. Every year afterwards, we would watch the awards together, and even when we moved away from home, we would still call long distance to compare notes during or after the show.
I believe I stayed home again from my brother’s party in Chicago, but drew this poster regardless. Tried a new ‘arrangement’ technique, putting the nominations in rows (from the top, actors, then actresses then supporting actors then supporting actresses, and then films with no actor nominees but still getting best picture nod, went in the center). I didn’t care for this much, and probably won't go back to it again. This is the poster for 2015 (honoring films from 2014), including The Grand Budapest Hotel, Selma, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Birdman, American Sniper, Wild, Boyhood and Gone Girl.
