Long Time No See

☼ A Welcome Back ☼

For those of you who don’t know me: Hi, I'm Briar! I’m a pagan witch and I’m making this post as my welcome back to the tumblr community. 

I made this blog back at the start of 2017 and it was the first public display of my practice. I had found a wonderful community of both witches and polytheistic friends, most of whom seem to have deactivated by now, and grew a tremendous amount. However, as I entered university everything in my faith took a back seat to the rest of my life. Now, in 2020 that is going to change! I’m looking to renter the community and continue growing.

I’ve been practicing magic into my faith for almost seven years now and so I’d like to think I know a thing or two. That said I am not a teacher and everything I say on this blog is likely rooted in my own personal experience. That’s how I tend to work most effectively, taking scaffolding from established sources but then tailoring it to my own practice. If there’s anything I talk about what you want to hear more about or are confused about then please feel free to ask, I just want to preface everything with my own personal bias.

Fern, Bracken - Secret bond of love, Fascination, Sincerity, Magic. In England it is believed that hanging dried ferns in the house will protect all the inhabitants from thunder and lightning damage. It is believed that it may rain when the ferns are cut or burnt. The bracken seed of the plant is said to provide magical qualities if you place a few in the pocket - invisibility being the most notable. It is also believed that treading on a fern will cause the traveller to become confused and lose his way. If a traveller treads on a fern he or she will become confused and lose their way.

Im Mittelalter pflanzte man Farn in die Kräutergärten, um böse Geister und Dämonen fern zu halten. Er sollte auch vor Blitz und Hagelschlag bewahren, und wer Farn bei sich trug, war gegen böse Anschläge auf Leib und Leben gefeit. Man hängte Farnkrautbüschel auch als Glücksbringer über die Türen.

Farne sind Sporenpflanzen, deswegen fehlen ihnen Blüte und Früchte, was unsere Vorfahren zu wilden Spekulationen beflügelte: Er solle, so hieß es, in der Johannisnacht genau um Mitternacht eine goldene Blüte hervor bringen, und dann auch sogleich den Samen abwerfen. Dass dieser dann besondere Kräfte haben sollte, versteht sich von selbst: Er machte den Träger stich- und kugelfest und außerdem unsichtbar, half angeblich, verborgene Schätze zu entdecken und war auch für allerhand Liebeszauber begehrt. Außerdem konnte man mit seiner Hilfe die Sprache der Tiere verstehen. Allerdings ließen sich die Samen natürlich nur gewinnen, wenn man bestimmte, magische Praktiken anzuwenden wusste.

In England sagt man, dass sich im Schatten des Farnkrauts oft Feen und Pixies verstecken. Man solle deswegen nicht einfach so durch Farne hindurch latschen und dürfe in der Nähe von Farnen auf gar keinen Fall über Geheimnisse reden, weil die Feen sie sonst überall verbreiten würden.

In der Heilkunde benutzte man ihn früher als Wurmmittel sowie in Umschlägen gegen Gicht und Rheuma. Als Signaturpflanze für den Rücken wurde er auch gegen Rückenschmerzen verordnet.

Für den Garten kann man inzwischen Farne aus aller Welt in den Gärtnereien kaufen, passend für alle möglichen Standorte. Besonders beliebt sind natürlich die winter- und immergrünen Sorten. Farne gehören zu den langlebigsten, nicht verholzenden Gartenpflanzen. An geeignetem Standort können sie sehr alt werden und bringen Romantik und etwas Geheimnisvolles in den Garten.
