What I would do to be seventeen

I want nothing more than to be seventeen again. I want to walk around my abandoned town at four in the morning. I want to watch the snow fall one flake at a time. The snow that comes drifting down softly against the golden light of the street lamps. The snow that makes you feel something indescribable but calming. The snow that melts on your tongue but crunches beneath your shoes. The snow that clings to you eyelashes. The snow that slips right off when you kick your boots against the door wanting desperately to go back outside to that land of wonder but you know there's nothing left for you. Not tonight. I want to walk down dark hallways with white brick walls, faintly illuminated by a link neon sign in the distance at night. To sit in the entryway of an abandoned school and just gaze off into space. I want that first true love that you'll never quite get back. That kind where there was so much passion but you knew you'd never make them happy. And in order to let them be truly happy, you had to break their heart. Only to turn from them. And walk home. In that soft snow. And stop at the school where you two met. And sit in the doorway staring at those white walls. Wondering if you just did the right thing. Only to realize years later what a fool you were for letting them go. But they're doing better now. They've moved on and have a happy life. And you can't really be upset because that is what you wanted. For them to be happy. But you are upset and you don't know why. Was it because you knew that could have been you? That you could still be with the love of your life? That you just wish you could go back to those simpler times and tell them how you really felt? To hold them tight and never let go?

Who knows. But I always think about it on lights like these. When the snow falls softly.
