Outside, to her surprise, Marion found that all manner of animals came regularly to her property. Chickens had settled in the already built chicken coop, while wild pigs came to graze on her land right beside a family of ducks who used her pond and patrolled the area for bugs and insects.

It was more than she had hoped for and Marion was pleased with her new home. It was coming together nicely. All that was left now was to clean and repair the outdoor sections and plant her garden. She had enough food to last for a while, but soon, she would need to start depending on her land to feed herself. It was time to get busy!

Living off the Land Challenge: Intro

Shortly after Marion’s grandmother passed away, she discovered that among a few personal items, her grandmother had also given her a small cottage in an even smaller town. Her first instinct was to sell it. After all, she was from a large city. But after the year she had just been through, she gave the idea a second thought.

Maybe what she really needed, especially after her failed engagement, was a change of scenery. A revision of her entire life, to be exact. Though she knew it wouldn’t be easy. The cottage hadn’t been lived in for almost 30 years. It had no running water and was about as far from her current comfort zone as it could possibly get. And yet, she felt pulled to it. Like she was being called home.

She knew it sounded crazy, but the more she thought about it, the more she knew it was the right decision. And before she knew it, she had sold her condo, her cars, and most of her personal items and set off for the county. Determined to live off the land and all it had to offer. It was going to be an adventure, but she knew without a doubt that she was up to the task.

It took longer than she thought it would but Marion finally got the outside of her property cleared and ready for use. Well, mostly. There was still that pair of owls living in the small storage shed that she had to get rid of. But since she was new there and wanted to be fair. She made a pact with the two of them that they could stay until she needed the space. Until then they had free rein. They seemed amenable to the idea so she left it at that and let them be.
