Here's my TBR for this month! My re-read of the month is Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson. My two other reads are Switched by Amanda Hocking, and You're Welcome, Universe by Whitney Gardner!! I'm so excited! . There are only three books on my TBR this month since I have family coming out to visit the fam here in British Columbia. I also have a ton of books from the library as well as a few egalleys to read. . What are you reading this month? You’re Welcome, Universe

You’re Welcome Universe (2017) by Whitney Gardner is about Julia, a teenage girl who is a graffiti artist. When someone writes something nasty on the wall at school about her friend, Julia tags over it. Her friend tells administration it was Julia, and Julia gets expelled from her school. She’s not only unhappy about going to a new school, she feels completely betrayed by her friend.  Julia now will be the only Deaf student at her new school, after years of attending a school for Deaf students. Julia keeps painting graffiti - but someone starts adding to her work, and she doesn’t know who.

This book does a good job of showing you what Julia must experience being Deaf at a hearing school, including the spotty dialogue when she doesn’t understand everything someone else says. When she lip reads, she misses some of it - and so we do too. We follow her through friendship troubles, figuring out her place as an artist, and discovering how to be Deaf in a hearing school. I also appreciate that while Julia is Indian and has two moms, this is not made to be a big deal in the plot. She is diverse in the way real people are diverse - not as big twists in the story, but as a quiet background to everything she does.

The book also has beautiful illustrations of Julia’s art, created by the author herself. 4/5

Chaotic Good by Whitney Gardner

This is a sweet summertime read that hits on some hard lessons about what the kids of today are facing on the daily. This book is all about hiding your geek, and learning that with the right people around you ... you don’t have to.

Our main character Cameron, is a geek, but not in the typical sense. You see while most people are all about the game, the movie or the book, Cameron is all about the costumes. Now this means people, internet trolls mainly, have decided she’s a fake. So with the bullying piling on, Cameron is just taking steps toward her future plans of art school and beyond one sewing project at a time.

Now where’s a girl to go for some costume inspiration? The nearest comic book store of course, unfortunately.... they aren’t quite as girl friendly as they could be, so drastic steps have to be taken to ensure Cameron’s portfolio is done in time for her interview. Dressed as her twin brother, she not only finds the comics she needs but she may have found some friends at the same time. Invited to join a dungeons and dragons game, Cameron gets pulled further and further into her cover. Will her new found friends stick around when the truth is revealed?

This isn’t a big thinking fantasy book, no epic world to learn, no deep characters to understand... which makes it the perfect brain candy book for summer.

Give this book a chance, you might like it too. I give this book 3 1/2 stars ⭐️

What are some hobbies you have outside of books/reading? 🎶 I actually like to sew & craft. When the weather is nice, I also like taking care of my flower garden (I have a few rose bushes that are my pride & joy).
