       It was like any other mission he had been sent on, although this time he didn’t have Widow covering his back, Talon had sent them on separate missions. That was their mistake.  On arriving at the location, Reaper had been ambushed and the rest was a blur. It wasn’t easy to kill a dead man, yet he could feel the life depleting from his body. But there was something he wanted to do before he died. His humanity had gotten the better of him as the phone moved up against his ear.

     ❝You’re not one for anything long, so I’ll make this quick. You don’t belong with Talon. I know you wonder why you’re still obeying them like a good lap dog, I’ve thought the same. You were a good woman one Amelie, there are still people out there who are willing to care for you. I’m only saying this because I care and- well your missions are going to be boring without me.❞ A small smile cracked on his bloodied lips. ❝Au Revoir Amelie.❞

He remembers breaking his arm. He remembers the pop and he remembers not crying when pain shot up his forearm. He remembers Jarvis shucking his suit jacket to wrap around it like a splint on a robin. He remembers the man scolding him in worry rather than anger. He remembers wincing at every bump during the drive to the hospital. Jarvis's arm thrust out, steadfast, to stop Tony from colliding with the dashboardwhen the traffic lights seemed to skip from green to red, never warning yellow. He remembers Jarvis's hand gripping the shoulder of his good arm as the doctor interrogated them both. The stethoscope felt like ice. A paper sheet crinkled beneath him on the exam table. Jarvis's knee bounced and his hands twisted. He remembers Jarvis explaining to Tony's parents what had happened. He remembers Howard storming away without another word. Maria kissed his forehead. Jarvis came to his room with dinner.

People come and go. Parents leave on business trips or getaways, sometimes trekking home weeks later when the cook tires of requests for macaroni and chicken wings. Sometimes the Starks are gone so long Tony forgets what their cocktail of Chanel No. 5 and Clive Christian No. 1 smells like. Sometimes, even with all the help bustling about, the house feels empty and suffocating at the same time, like everything exists in a vacuum.

"—No, yeah, I'm free. They're out. Until...Monday." Monday-shmunday, he has no idea when Howard and Maria will saunter in from who-knows-where. Boca or something. "Mi casa es su casa." Realmente, mi casa es la casa de nadie.

Steve slouches at the back of his physics class, chewing his lip. He's forgotten his glasses, of course, because he slept in from staying up late to finish his history essay and had left the house in a rush, and now he can't see a single thing. The board, and their teacher, and all the rest of it, is just a blur. He's been squinting for the last fifteen minutes, but it's no use. He holds back a sigh as he scribbles a note, and hands it over to her as discreetly as he can manage.
