Back home is the US! This experience has been amazing and I'm never going to forget it. I'm sad that I had to leave Vienna, but being back home is really nice. We had to drive back from the airport through the snow and ice for two hours, but we made it!
Last day in Vienna! I finally went to the Albertina, an art museum I have seen almost every day this entire time. They had a lot of amazing paintings from famous painters, from Degas and Van Gogh here, to Andy Warhol. After that I went home and had the last meal with my host family. I haven't talked much about them, but they're super nice and their kids are great. It was a little weird to have tacos for my last night in Austria, but hey. It was good. After that, a few friends and I went ice skating for the last time. And I just realized that I didn't take any pictures of it, which kinda sucks. I am going to be sad leaving here, but it means that I'm going home, which is nice. And I fully intend to come back someday, so I'm not seeing for the last time. See you all soon!
This week we went to the Kunstkammer in the art history museum. It was the private collection of the Hapsburg rulers, and was brought together to the museum in 1891 from several separate locations. The amount of gold and other precious materials in these rooms was really incredible. Also, it's a bit late to do this, but I'm going to link to the blog of one of the other people in the group. He posts more than I do and has a nice camera so his pictures are actually good. You'll also learn a lot more about what we do and some of the trips we've been on grey280.net/blog/category/travel/austria
These are from two different places, but I thought I would combine them into one post because there's not enough for either to have their own. The first three pictures are from the Wien Museum. The two portraits are of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth. Franz Joseph ruled from 1848 to 1916. The country is celebrating his 100 death anniversary in the 21st of November. His wife, known more often as Sisi, is well-loved and has been the subject of numerous films and plays. She pops up literally everywhere. There was a cafe named after her in Krakow. Her Venice apartments were part of a museum she went to, there are pictures and and books and random things with her on it anywhere you go. The other pictures are of the Nationalbibliothek, the Austrian national library. It is in the Baroque style and was finished in 1723. It is absolutely gorgeous and I wanted to stay there forever and just live there.
