It was as though an electric current had coursed through Faye's veins, igniting every nerve and setting all her senses on high alert. Singing crickets and tree frogs did little to distract her, nothing more than white noise compared to the thrumming of her heart. The dank, earthy odor of the ground rose up and filled her lungs as she ran her fingers through the dirt, staring up at Rayn before looking to the immaculate mansion just beyond the tree line. Its warm lights from inside bathed the emerald grass with an inviting warmth, almost welcome were it not for the high ironwrought gates that surrounded the land.
Groups of people walked intermittently along the paved driveway, laughing obnoxiously in between incomprehensible conversations. Faye could imagine their chatter like buzzing cicadas on a hot day as they spoke poorly of everyone — especially the ones they called friends. It was a game to dig up the most dirt on one another and tear each other down in hopes of reaching the top and earning the favor of whoever ruled the roost. Miserable and boring affairs, she knew she could play along with them despite her disdain for them.
"Do you often infiltrate parties of criminals?" She asked curiously, dusting her hands as she rose up. They would need to move soon if they didn't want to be spotted exiting the dark woods by one of the incoming groups. Smoothing her dress, she straightened up, feeling a ghostly hand press against her back and another yank her head up high. The illusion of confidence was easy to perform, though hers was true thanks to a childhood of grooming to be some rich fuck's obedient wife.
