What whump media type do you prefer and why?

i prefer the good ol' unpublished (and occasionally self-published) online indie authors!

firstly, i prefer written whump over any other general medium, because i feel that it above all allows the reader to get into the character's head. in visual mediums, things tend to be more external (not that i don't enjoy some good whump art because I DO), while in writing you get internal monologues and descriptions of a character's fear and such.

the other reason is there's no corporate bullshit interfering. while the production value of a tv show or movie or a traditionally-published book may be high, all of that has to go through so many layers of "how marketable is this". the whump stuff you find on tumblr or in the original fiction tag on ao3, that's just the unfiltered desires of someone who thought "wouldn't it be amazingly fucked up if-" and then wrote it. i love that stuff. i love this community.

Day 11: Favourite form of whump media

My favourite format for whump is text! Books, ebooks, online original fiction, fanfiction… Written stories of all varieties. I like the levels of depth and complexity that are possible to achieve in writing, but also the space it leaves for imagination. In a genre which focusses on both physical and emotional pain, writing's ability to portray the outer and inner worlds of characters in equal detail counts for a lot.

I enjoy whump art as well, sometimes in the context of stories (webcomics, illustrations of characters, and so on), but also on its own. Less into TV or film, and while video games can be fun, I’ve yet to encounter one which has as much of an impact as text in terms of whump specifically.

What whump media do you prefer and why?

I like all types of media but for this blog specifically I mostly read people’s writing that’s posted on tumblr. I reblog a lot of whump art as well but honestly a lot of it goes to my gore blog @goreinthepot because I find a lot of heavier stuff can be visually triggering for some people!!

I like movies and shows too but the sound can become jarring if im not in the right mood, like screaming and begging. Its more senses being thrown at me. Reading is great for this genre and I love supporting artists and writers here :)

What whump media type do you prefer and why?

I typically read whump works on here because that's where most of the content is and its the most easily accessible (without having to skim through various parts of a show to get to the whumpy bits) but what I really like and think is underrated is whump art or whump comics!

I love whump art, I'm always looking for good art that has whumpy elements (I've even gone through the guro tag on occasion but its a lot of young anime girls and im not about that. you do you tho) because sometimes I just wanna see blood or the expressions on the characters faces. you know what i mean?

I even have a whump art pinterest board that i compiled 😂

as for whump comics, they are so underrated but there is one that is consistently updating called Riot Kings by @befuddled-calico-whump and its got a lot of good stuff so you should check it out

obligatorily mentioning that action manhwas should focus on the whump more because come on the potential is right there

ok so I’m cheating a bit here bc I have two: firstly I love whump in the form of a tv show - I like getting to know the characters through both whumpy and non-whumpy episodes, and I loveeee the audio and visual aspect. actually seeing the blood, hearing the screams and whimpers, just having that extra sensory input, really makes the whump that much more enjoyable for me! however, I also absolutely adore written whump, primarily fanfic, because it’s pretty much always written with the whump in mind!! I know that the author and I want the same thing for the whumpee (pain and suffering), whereas in tv shows often the creators aren’t thinking of the pain and suffering and tend to not focus on the whump as much as I’d like. but both media are so so good and I honestly don’t know if I could choose just one :)

Okay, so I actually prefer writing and styalised, semi-realistic, and animation art as my mediums of whump.

I have a strong aversion to a lot of live-action whump and I can't place why other than that I am just a very squeamish person (a couple of months back, I cut my thumb, and passed out not once, but four (4) fucking times. You heard me right. I'm FUCKED lmao I WISH I was exaggerating)... ANYWAY ^-^'

We have established that I am squeamish, which means that any media with realistic blood and gore is automatically kinda gross rather than whumpy; instead of the fun stomach flips, I get the not-so-fun stomach unsettle. So, many T.V. shows and movies which many consider to be whumpy just don't do it for me, because even on the offchance that the character fits into my hyperspecific tastes in whumpees, it's unlikely it'll ever come to anything because of the way realistic effects sicken me (not negative, I mean very literally, almost lost my dinner once from a very realistic and talented portrayal of arsenic poisoning that I was NOT prepared for lmao).

I saw this gif once, a knife trailing across skin. Would've been absolutely gorgeous if it hadn't made my skin crawl like I scraped a knife badly across a ceramic plate for minutes afterward (:

All this to say that written, drawn, and animated mediums are the only media I reliably get whumperflies off, and even then, It's usually writing, or art, usually my own art because, again, I am very specific and I have a lot more context for an image I created myself ^-^' (usually a drawing of a whumpy idea).

Writing, art, and animation are safe, reliable, and they deliver for me, they allow the portrayals of my favourite kind of whumpees, I can go as niche as I want, and since most of the whump devouring I do is online, I can filter out a lot of the content I don't want to see uwu

So this has changed over the years. When I was younger I would seek out books and movies with horror and gore type elements but then as I got older it kinda shifted. I went through this brief phase where I watched every single movie or TV show in existence that had a character with a chronic illness because whumpy for me has always been a way for me to take my problems and pains and put them on someone who doesn't actually end up harmed because they're a fictional character.

I do much the same when it comes to fanfiction (writing and reading) granted I haven't been doing much of either lately... But, depending on the time I probably have been doing more writing lately as I'm trying to finish three big projects that have been dragging on for a year or two. I possibly—possibly—might enjoy writing than reading only for the fact that writing is a huge de-stressor for me. Mostly because of my anxiety, but it's the same reason that I have my rule where if I'm writing for a fandom I don't read any fanfic from it. Mostly because I don't want someone to say "hey I wrote something similar" or someone say I stole something or anything. And I would never steal something someone else wrote ever and I know fandom is always saying if something you see inspires you just give credit where credits due, but still just gives me all the uncomfy icks 😅.
