I’ve kind of done this recently, but it included just general authors and no explanation on why they might be my favorites. So here we go!
FAVORITE OC SICKFICS: Ok, to be honest I’m obsessed with the OCs of all of these people and had to try really hard to choose a “favorite” fic by them. I chose whichever one I feel like probably gave me the most whumperflies/made me surge with love for the characters, but really I can’t say there’s a single thing these people have written about their OCs that I don’t adore.
Sick While Camping by @wussifer - Other than the obvious hiking/being exposed to the elements, includes parental relationship, fever, vomiting, complications, coughing, hospital visit, teenage griping… If there’s a sickness trope I love it’s in there.
Instant Karma by @whiskey-tango-matcha - Yeah I seriously could not choose one for these guys so I’m just listening a general top contender. Found family, working through an illness, hiding/denying a cold, fevers, coughing, contagion, snz, the sweetest platonic assholes pair out there. Honestly tied with Home For Christmas, Heart. Sick., and Hard to Shake though.
This drabble by @iwritesickfic - Coughing, pity, sweetness, caretaking. There’s other longer, delicious stories for this pair but this drabble in particular just hit me right in the heart for some reason. Like ahhh I love them.
The Worst Timing by @suddencolds - Fake dating, snz, pushing through a fever, sick while on vacation and traveling, sick for an important event where you’re on display, swooning, and relationship tension. It’s always a good day for Yvesverse (and never a good day for Yves).
The Superbowl by @bellysoupset - Found family drama, crying, emeto, just a house of multiple people being miserable as hell. This is more like my most recent fav because idk how this writer does it but they have 300+ bangers and constantly bangs out more. I consider their universe my penny novels.
Finally, I just couldn’t remember what my favs were for these other two but @sicknessbysalem and @booking-glass-goddess have some TOP tier OC sickfic content!
FAVORITE WHUMPY FANFICS: I don’t read a lot of fanfic these days so I apologize that everything on this list is very much 2015 and earlier.
The Heart Rate of a Mouse by beggarsnotes: Panic!ATD fic set in the 1960s. One of the best things I’ve ever read fanfiction or otherwise. Lots of emotional whump, relationship abuse, some physical whump, drugs and being sick from drugs, depression, homophobia. Incredible freaking BOOK.
Interludes by Shandyall. Glee AU where Blaine has a stutter and he meets Kurt in an online class. Lots of emotional whump and intense anxiety. Sweetness all around and what inspired me to write stories where you basically go through someone’s entire life.
A Stranger Heart by preciousmellow: Glee AU where Blaine is homeless and Kurt takes him in when he gets really sick. Contains homophobia, being sick out in the cold without resources, pneumonia.
If I Die Young by BlowTheCandlesOut: Glee AU where Blaine is diagnosed with brain cancer after they graduate high school. A tearjerker with a great plot that I never read a second time bc it hits HARD but it’s great. Obviously lots of cancer related whump, neurological symptoms, intense emotional angst of the part of both Blaine and Kurt.
Until the Sun Goes Down by andiheardeverything - Glee, Blaine and Kurt have two kids and Blaine has osteosarcoma. It was never finished but I loved the chapters that were published. Cancer as a parent whump.
The Hay Wain by A Benediction: BBC Sherlock, a young Sherlock runs away from his abusive uncle and lives on his own. Stuck with me because of its unique (and heartbreaking) plot. Includes illness but mostly its emotional whump and abuse. Major NSFW for CSA. Never quite finished but close enough.
Alone on the Water by Mad_Lori - BBC Sherlock, Sherlock has a terminal illness and John stays with him until the end. It’s really fucking depressing and contains character death. Read this if you want to cry.
The Adventure of the Dying Detective Inspector by codswallop - BBC Sherlock, John/Lestrade. Lestrade has the flu and hallucinating with a high fever, Sherlock uses that to his advantage. Has a great side story where Lestrade’s really delirious. He’s also sick in other parts of the series and they talk about his heart defect that makes illnesses more serious. I reread this while making this list and damn it’s still SO GOOD.
Dark Place by @rudeflower - Gilmore Girls. AU where when Jess moves in with Luke, he’s also escaping CSA. Obvious emotional whump, trauma, parental relationship. Written soooo well.
Burn by @ernestonlysayslovelythings - Gilmore Girls. Jess pneumonia sickfic. Parental relationship, from bad to worse, coughing, fever, hospital stay, angst. Again with all my fav tropes wrapped into one fabulous package.
Edit: Adding You’ll Never Lose Me by Many Sleepless Nights - Glee, short one shot sick fic that for some reason has just lived rent free in my head for a decade. I just really like it haha. Both parents and kid sick, hiding an illness, mean sickie, tearful sickie.
