“Belunae are evil. They will take away everything and everyone you love, and leave you dead or worse as thanks. Never forget that, Pete,” Ma said.

The realm of Ewrancore has not forgotten the massacres that flooded the streets with human blood. Thanks to the Hunter Corps— an organisation sworn to protect all humans— belunae are on the brink of extinction and soon, humanity will finally be safe. Newly promoted House Master Johnstone will do anything to achieve his ambition to head the greatest Hunter House in history.

In a world so hostile, secrecy is key to to survival. All young belunae Pete Spencer wants is a normal life, but no one can ever know what he is— not even his two best friends Liz and Timmothey, and especially not his ma.

Soon, Pete will graduate from post-schooling courses, but not if his long-time tormentor can help it. One fateful night, everything Pete worked so hard for falls apart, and he goes missing. Liz and Timmothey don't know what happened, but they vow to do whatever it takes to bring him home safe.

In their search, Liz and Timmothey find more than they bargained for. What the trio discovers puts them in mortal danger, and threatens to tear them apart.

The cost of trying may prove too much to bear.

Hey so I know we All Know This but I will NEVER be over a character being feverish and delirious and making No sense. I will never be over a glittery-eyed, shivering, distressed character weakly gripping another's arm and asking them questions they don't know the answer to, and probably don't mean anything at all. I will never be over characters calling out for people either long gone or right next to them, but unrecognizable in their delirium. I will never be over a character crying in frustration and fear over something in their head they can't explain to whoever is helping them, and all they can do in return is stroke their hair and shush them gently.

I love it when their painful pasts are revealed by their distraught rambling, ESPECIALLY if it's in front of a villain or enemy or person who doesn't like them~ Or when they say things that show their low opinion of themselves, clearly as a result of people in their lives not treating them well~

rescued! Living Weapon who thinks that they died and went somewhere better

so I was scrolling through Whump (as you do) and I had this idea of a Living Weapon who was rescued, but they think that they died.

like:

LW is found barely conscious on the battlefield, breathing shallow and almost dead

Team brings them back to base, heals them and what not

LW seeing Caretaker when they wake up and they think Caretaker is an angel

They knew they died on that battlefield. They felt their life pouring out through the hole in their armour, the blackness creeping in on their vision, the quiet stillness and silence that followed.

All they know is that they are finally free from the torment of their handlers/owners/whatever, and now they don’t have to worry

You can’t be hurt if you’re dead, right?

And so they actually recover well, thinking that now they are in Heaven or some other, better place away from the carnage of their past life, which now just seems like a horrible dream.

The Team are angels to them, there to help and heal them, and Caretaker is of course their angel

And so imagine the horror and pain they feel when they see one of their handlers brought in for questioning

And the crushing reality that they are still alive and their old tormentors are still around

What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening. If kindness used to come with a price, kindness can feel suspicious. So healing is not just “they know they’re safe now.” Healing is the slow, annoying, deeply unfair process of teaching the body that the old prediction is not always the present truth.

I used to use Google docs, but the white mode only was really annoying me (tires my eyes), so I swapped to Ellipsus (which I genuinely love and recommend), but it was bothering me a bit that I need wifi in order to use it, so now I switched to LibreOffice Writer, which I do like.

It very much has a Microsoft Word feel, but is open source and you need no accounts to use it. It's local on your device, so no AI can scan it, and no wifi is needed.

I still wish it had the Google Docs cards, because, bitch, that thing is so good for easy organizing.

I love it when Whumpee is leaning on things. They're dizzy, nauseous, in too much pain to stand, or just plain tired, and they can't get by without some kind of support.

Leaning on cabinets and against walls in people's houses. Propping their head up with their hands at the dining table. Steadying themself against a banister on the stairs. Holding on to the post of the traffic light for dear life while they wait to cross the road because if they stand still unsupported they will fall to the ground.

It's such a small display of I am not feeling good, but once another character notices it becomes so obvious. This person is weak and vulnerable. Either I can help them, or I can hurt them further. It's not like they're in any position to stop me.

Reminder to self: A file folder of outlines and character notes and half-written scenes is the equivalent of an artist’s sketchbook and holds just as much value to the creative process.

If a framed canvas isn’t the only worthwhile expression of visual art, then a fully edited and polished piece of significant length is not the only worthwhile expression of writing.

not everything in a story has to or should be "realistic" but in my opinion there's a level of illusion that should be maintained, and I think that's the actual problem that many people try to pinpoint with the "unrealistic" criticism. Dialogue shouldn't be written like an actual transcript of human speech, but should contribute to the illusion of a real person speaking. A character is a tool of the story, not a narrative, but we're trying to maintain the illusion that they are a person. Worldbuilding should exist to serve the story, not to be a perfect simulacrum of how every aspect of nature/society etc. would actually play out for real. But there should be the illusion that it could be real, that organizations and systems would operate in such a way, that people might behave in such a way.

in conclusion: "Is this realistic?" <<wrong question. "Does this serve the illusion or disrupt it?" <<now we're talking

There is an odd thing I see in books sometimes where a character who is defined by their steadfast loyalty to a person or organization is presented with one (1) piece of evidence against them and immediately changes their mind.

I was just reading a book where a character is deeply loyal to the royal family despite being their literal whipping girl, but she immediately decides that the king must be a bad ruler the first time she sees poverty exists. And he is--but it's weird that the 15 years of being whipped didn't convince her but the existence of poor people did.

It often reads like a plot-convenient way of having a character change their mind without having to do any of the actual work or spend any actual time on what it means for them to change their mind. But it also often rings false--we know for a fact that people with deeply held beliefs are often not convinced no matter how much evidence they see to the contrary, much less because one piece of evidence was presented to them.

Writing partner and I were recently working on a piece that involved a character escaping brainwashing like that and we had a convo about this exact thing. Because I thought the character need more than one thing to break the brainwashing, and partner, who has actual experience escaping a cult she grew up in, said something very interesting. 'Not if there were cracks.'

She went on to explain how for her, there had always been little things about the cult that bothered her, but she excused them, pushed them aside, papered them over in her own mind. And then one thing happened. One very specific thing that went directly contrary to all the things the cult taught her.

And that one thing put enough pressure on her belief that all those cracks... exploded and she lost faith in the cult practically overnight. And the thing is, from my outsider perspective, it was like one day I talked with her and she was true believer, and the next time religion came up she was an ex- and talking about how she'd just recognized this thing about how harmful her former religion was.

I knew another man, briefly, who grew up evangelical protestant, spent more than half his life living and proselytizing as a true believer, then one day just... stopped. He said that he had always had doubts, never really believed, but he pushed all those doubts and disbeliefs down and acted all the more fervent to prove to himself that he was a good Christian. Until one day he realized what he was doing and... was done.

Now, with writing, we truly hope an author is good enough to convey this kind of internal conflict, but when someone spends half their life suppressing these kinds of things, it can be very hard to see even from the 'inside', because hiding it from themselves is the whole point. And when aren't talking about a PoV character or are in a real world situation...

Not long ago, i would have agreed with you. Now I can say that actually, sometimes I can be 'just one thing' -- or at least look that way because all the little things that came before are so small they're invisible.

I also want to say that this doesn't mean, to me, that we shouldn't take this note as writers. If fiction were completely realistic, there would have been a lot more bathroom breaks in Homer's Odyssey, but we take liberties to get to emotional truths rather than things that absolutely totally could have happened that way. Loved reading both the original post and your addition.

This is absolutely how it happened to me, too. It wasn't even in the moment--I was just in my car at work, making deliveries, and my brain was turning something over and over in the back of my mind. All of a sudden, things just... fell apart, and I wasn't even fully able to identify where that last straw came from. I went out on that delivery a believer, and I got back to the store afterward feeling lighter and happier than I had in a very long time.

Of course, if you want that to be seen in a work of fiction it's important to have that set up and payoff, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to experiment with how you do it. Is there a way to make that single sudden change of mind feel satisfying? Is there a good way to express to the outside people the changes that are happening subtly? Maybe the logic of it doesn't even need to be expressed--the most important thing might be simply hammering in the profound and sudden feeling of understanding. It all depends on your story and character.
