XXXV: Provocations) ~ #Finished: #TheTenantOfWildfellHall by #AnneBrontë. • Rating: 8/10 • *spoiler alert* Surely groundbreaking for its time, this novel, in which sexism and inequalities in marriage are all over the place, exposes the gender issues at that time, holding up a mirror to Victorian society. The mysterious tenant of #WildfellHall, #HelenGraham, has blindly fallen in love with, married and let herself abused by #ArthurHuntingdon, a rake, despite forewarnings about him. Though too late and at the expense of her peace and honour, Helen has realized what a toxic marriage she has been in and leaves her husband. I loathed Huntingdon, some of his rakish friends and #AnnabellaWilmot. However, everyone gets what they deserve, some by being redeemed, some by paying too dearly. #GilbertMarkham, the narrator, sometimes annoyed me with his selfishness in his love for Helen. I liked how Helen decided to bring up her son, Arthur, Jr. in such a way that he wouldn't be like his father. This is a really good and unforgettable book, a milestone in feminist writing, but was at some parts really dull and repetitive in itself for me. ~ «... to wheedle and coax is safer than to command...» (Ch. XXVI: The Guests) ~ «‘Of him, to whom less is given, less will be required; but our utmost exertions are required of us all...’» (Ch.
