Not bones-related but I've got fire ecology on the mind today, so: Did you know that the Unovan pine has a symbiotic relationship with Volcarona and Larvesta?
The pine trees' cones require the heat of a low-grade wildfire to release their seeds, so they've synchronized their breeding cycle with the wild Volcarona of their native habitat. The trees attract the new baby Larvesta with sweet-smelling sap, and the Larvesta ignite the underbrush around the trees, giving the seeds the heat they need to germinate!
Scientists believe they adapted like this to reduce competition from other trees, whose seeds are destroyed by the fire, leaving plenty of space and resources for the Unovan pine's seedlings.
I’m usually not into the whole ‘body swap’ trope, but thinking about it with Jon is… something. Because the thing is, someone swapping into Jon’s body wouldn’t be a comedy. It would be horrific. Jon’s body and powers are a nightmare for those who aren’t either Kryptonian or truly emotionless, where they do not feel a single thing.
Jon’s powers are terrifying. Picture this. You first get swapped into his body, you have about a split second to realize what happened. And then, every single sound in the country, and even countries beyond, all start in your ears all at once. Every baby’s wail, every heartbeat, every scream of pain, every sound of footsteps or car crashes or falling trees. A person tap dancing three streets away is like standing next to a speaker at a metal concert.
Say you get that under control, that you aren’t instantly driven to madness by all of those sounds.
You go to take a step, perhaps heavier than normal due to being scared or another adverse reaction. Instantly, the ground splits at your feet. Causing a crater. You look on, terrified. Another step creates another crater. You eventually stop moving. Having no idea how to control the vast amount of strength within your body. Someone shocks you by placing their hand on your shoulder, you reflexively push them away. They go flying fifty feet, slamming into or through a brick wall. Or someone tries to hug you, you grip back and suddenly you hear multiple bones snap. You may even try to shake someone’s hand, all of their bones snap.
It doesn’t even hit you immediately but soon you discover that everything stinks. It’s the worst stench of your life. The most delicious aromas combined with the filthiest garbage in the city.
But that’s not the worst of it.
No, you begin to feel scared. Or most likely angry. Whether at yourself or others. You feel the heat rising within your body, until it shoots out in concentrated red beams. Buildings are on fire, cars are sliced in half, the damage you have caused is extensive. The more out of control you feel, the worse it gets. All of the emotions surround you at once, you get overwhelmed from the complete overload of your senses, the gravity of what happened is catching up to you.
You don’t notice the brightness surrounding you. You don’t notice others shielding their eyes. You don’t feel your molecules vibrating so intensely you are left shaking. You better pray someone has kryptonite on hand or a red sun lamp. Otherwise, you would explode, taking out most of the country with you.
Because your powers don’t come gradually like Jon’s do. They don’t take time to develop as you slowly get used to them. They are instant, intense, and overwhelming.
Jon’s powers, while mostly stabilized, are still unpredictable. He hasn’t grown into the full potential of his powers yet, his biology is something only a select few have encountered before. Most of them long gone.
Because even when they came gradually, Jon still caused a wildfire in a huge forest with a single blast of heat vision when he hadn’t been trained. He’s incinerated things he can never get back. He’s crushed and destroyed things with his strength.
There’s a reason people are so afraid when they discover what he is, why people take such extreme action to neutralize him. Why people see him as a highly dangerous threat to all of humanity.
The stars aligned for Jon. He got away with only relatively minor in scale disasters thanks to his father and intense training and the fact that his powers came gradually. Jon works hard daily to control and train his powers, because he know things could be so much worse if he didn’t.
So yeah, body swap AUs for Jon are pretty much a no go on this blog LMAO.
goodmorning world my wish of the day is for the sky to stop being FUCKING ORANGE like damn climate change i know you don’t work this way but could i have ??? one year off ??? haven’t you caused me enough permanent mental issues and trauma ??? like damn gurl
Of course as soon as all my housemates (who are literal wildland firefighters) get called out, a fire erupts a few miles away from my home!
Hey. To all the people who get nervous about and/or have trauma around fire season. I see you. I know this is scary. Make yourself whatever checklists you need for calming down or responding to crisis, do all the prepping you need to feel safe, reach out to people if you need help. The summer months can be hard but they don't last forever.
listening to people set off fireworks as if we didn’t just have a heatwave & two weeks without rain 🔫🔫
