Already starting another. Nine Coaches Waiting was absolutely gripping and I LOVED it! Definitely up there with my other two favorites: "This Rough Magic" and "Madam, Will You Talk?" Actually I'd say it's probably the best one out of all I've read. Anyway, I adore everything Mary Stewart writes. Her descriptions make you feel as though you are right there. oh sorry I’ve just realised I was unclear, I am trans and do experience physical dysphoria - I didn’t for some years when I was younger, that’s what I was trying to say. I just felt uncomfortable with the assertion that ‘you have to have dysphoria to be trans’ if by that you meant physical dysphoria, as 15 year old me for example would have read that and felt I was being told I couldn’t have an identity which in fact fit me. Anyway, thanks for answering :)

Like I said, it started out similarly for me, too - so people who are questioning their gender because they are uncomfortable with the one they were assigned at birth are totally valid.

hey, this is a bit random but, you know you say you have to have dysphoria to be trans? Do you think you can have some sort of social dysphoria without having physical dysphoria? I'm pretty sure I had years of this vague feeling of not being a girl without any physical dysphoria whatsoever. I really don't want to seem like I'm trying to police your views or be rude, I just think it's important not to invalidate the way people experience this x

okay sorry having looked at your archive and seen how you’re defining dysphoria (I’ve seen a lot of people using it to mean physical dysphoria particularly) I can better see your point.

I’m gonna try to answer your original more question in depth, still, so if you’d like to read this that might help a little?

Now, first and foremost: dysphoria definitely does not mean hating your body/yourself. For some trans people, this is how they feel! For others (myself included), it’s not so serious, not always prevalent, and definitely not as bad as some people make it out to be. 

What it is is feeling certain sex characteristics where there are none - for example, when I get top dysphoria, I feel as though there are giant balloons added onto my chest and that my real flat chest is stuck underneath them, and there’s no way to take them off. Kinda gross, right? 

May I ask what you mean by “vague feeling of not being a girl”? This definitely sounds like social dysphoria! Do you feel this way because you don’t want other people sexualizing your body, or do you feel this way because you feel slightly like another gender and don’t feel comfortable with the way people perceive you to be something you’re not? 

While I cannot tell you that you are trans or not (as that is up to you and how you feel you are affected by any kind of dysphoria!), I can totally help you talk about it if you want! 

Social dysphoria is valid, but another thing is you might have some very slight, barely noticeable physical dysphoria along with it. I was the same way! I felt uncomfortable being called a girl, but I didn’t know why or have physical dysphoria until later on (two years ago is when the physical dysphoria kicked in for me). I’m not saying you’ll have it at some point, but it is possible!

not your fault obviously, but just before that quote in the interview he explains he thinks it was important to have a central female character because it's 'less common'. So I'd say in context the fact his statement is about equality, not inequality, is more apparent. just so you know, lack-of-context issues, not graeme manson-issues

Fair enough, I was looking at the quote presented, which in itself may not have had the same sentiment as the rest of the interview. Thanks for the information :)

(I'm assuming you accept male characters are more standard on tv/in film). I think he means it's more important to see many female characters right now because it isn't seen as often - he's saying it because women aren't seen as standard right now, hence the assertion is dependent on a current gender imbalance and he's seeing the greater number of female characters on ob as one step towards addressing that imbalance. I doubt the guy's end goal is tv and film being female dominated

Alright, essentially, if he (is it a he?) stuck a now, or right now, or a reference to current times in there. The sentence would be fine, and yes, with the current imbalance (although I’m not sure whether that makes people see one gender as the ‘standard’ naturally. Maybe for a paricular role, but not necessarily universally) that would be a perfecly acceptable thing to say. The fact is. He didn’t, and what was said was sexist as a result
