Prunus americana is the Wild Plum. The fruit is edible and tasty but the pit to fruit ratio is very high. I have read descriptions that it can make a nice ornamental tree but I would have to disagree. It likes to produce numerous suckers and without constant battling the suckers will naturally grow into a thicket.

Another fruit we tried at the MD native plant society meeting earlier this week was American Plum. It was actually tasty, though the skin is a bit tough.
