has a quiet courage and curiosity about her (is quiet mostly because she's very critical of herself).
quiet, but still articulate. also very perceptive.
into astrology and space-y things. she even thinks of people as vessels of universes and she usually sees the best in everyone (she sees what makes them radiate).
though she often has her head in the clouds, she has her feet firmly planted in the ground. she doesn't like the idea of traveling too much. she seeks consistency and security.
her greatest fear is being forgotten.
she believes in no-win situations, but she likes finding ways to turn something into a win-win situation.
tends to live in the past. she can hold a grudge, but only after being wronged time after time again. she constantly thinks about the lives that she is not living (what if she made this choice or what if she took this road).
changes quite a bit because who she is is rooted in her emotions. she follows the idea of homeostasis -- changing to stay the same. she'll change who or what she is to maintain her current position / security. because of this, not many know who she truly is.
has a strong sense of right and wrong and good vs. bad but doesn't always do what she perceives as right or good. tends to be swayed by her emotions.
artistic. she dabbles in painting and photography. surrounds herself with beauty.
a bit of a competitive perfectionist.
thinks everything happens for a reason. they aren't always good reasons though.
early on, gareth would buy her stuff as a subconscious way of securing her love. she had to repeatedly tell him that he doesn't need gifts to buy her affection; he already had it.
thanks to varsha, gareth's been able to focus on one thing and see it to its completion (since he tends to tackle multiple things at once and never finish something; she used to worry that he'd eventually leave her, but he told her he's in this relationship for as long as she'll have him).
he has a need to fix things, she has a need to learn the purpose of things. but she makes him realize he can't fix everyone and not everyone needs nor wants to be fixed. he shows her that you don't need to tear something down to learn how it ticks.
she gives him hope that all the good he does is not for nothing. she convinces him that he is inspiring the good in others.
gareth gets her to try new things. he's always right there with her with each new experience.
she loves him for all that he is, which he isn't used to since most people are repulsed by his troll heritage or just don't really care for him since he can't really hold a long conversation. with varsha, it's different. she makes him feel comfortable. she also makes him realize that he's so focused on his troll heritage (and his slowness, along with it) that it's all some people see of him because it's all he bothers to show.
he gives her a sense of security. he even switched to a job requiring less traveling so he could be home more with her and their daughter. (but no, she did not ask him to do that.)
he used to run from everything to avoid confrontation and just people in general. no one really got to know him and he didn't really want to know people because he just didn't want to risk more occasions of repulsion. but she gives him hope that people are more accepting than he was led to believe.
facts and face value used to be all that mattered to him, but she gets him to see beyond that by getting him to see himself beyond his "worst" parts.
they can talk on and on about their day and never get tired of each other. they can't talk about their work, but they can talk about everything else. they like talking about different realities. she likes talking about the realistic ones that could've happened if she or he made a different choice in their lives. she also likes talking about lives in outer space. he likes talking about realities created in their dreams. (he sees dreams as realities layered upon each other.)
they get into arguments over various things (mostly about one of them being over-involved in the lives of others, whether or not they should've let their daughter go to the U.S. for schooling, gareth's involvement with his younger brother's activism and bar fights, her inability to let things go, how it takes multiple wrongs for her to deny help to someone, her indecisiveness, and how easily swayed she is by emotions, etc.) but at the end of the day, regardless of whatever fight they're in the middle of, they still go to bed together.
their relationship isn't so much about changing (mostly on gareth's part) who / what they are so much as it is about growing together. he pushes himself out of his comfort zone to be more deserving of her and her faith in him.
1960: gareth and varsha meet somewhere in hogsmeade. they both saw each other around the ministry but never struck up a conversation until then.
before she got married to gareth, there was someone else she was involved with for a long time and couldn't let go so she was back and forth with him and gareth. gareth was understanding, but eventually he asked her to make a choice and commit to it. he gave her space and eventually, she showed up on his doorstep, announcing her choice -- him.
1965: gareth proposes to varsha and she accepts.
1966: she and gareth marry. their daughter, ariadne "aria" tierney, is born later that year.
their daughter is attending school in the U.S. because, like her father, she wanted to travel.
gareth introduces her to a bunch of muggle stuff. two years ago, he took her to see star wars and she fell in love with han solo. she calls gareth her scruffy nerf-herder.
