Wip of a diviners poster redraw I’m going to color digitally when I have the time.

So a while ago I did this project for The Diviners, where part of it was drawing a poster. I never got the project back because of good old COVID, but a couple of days ago I found some of the writing for said project in my files and tried to recreate the poster to the best of my memory.

From left to right the characters are Uncle Will, Jericho, Sam, Evie, Isaiah, Memphis, Theta, Mabel, and Sister Walker, with Naughty John in the middle.

This poster is for the first book, since it’s the only one I’ve read, and because of the amount of characters I tried to narrow it down to the main characters with povs that show up frequently in just the first book, so that’s why characters like Henry and Ling aren’t here.

The Diviners by Libba Bray

This is definitely one of my new favourite books. I was so intimidated by how many pages it was because I expected it to be an overly drawn out story that would put me to sleep in five pages, but I was so wrong.

While I did think the beginning was slightly repetitive because we were being introduced to so many characters, once I passed it I couldn’t stop reading. Bray did an amazing job of spreading out the action which made it feel much more intense. It’s not often that my heart races while reading, but I lost track of how many times it happened during The Diviners. (Side note don’t read this before bed, just don’t.)

I really appreciated how expansive the world seemed. Every plot line, character, backstory was all connected in one way or another. Bray showed the glamour of 1920’s New York while not shying away from the darker aspects of the time (racism, homophobia, etc.) Often I can’t relate to historical fiction the same way I would a contemporary novel, but Bray was able to create a world and characters that felt truly alive. The group dynamic was hilarious while also staying true to each individual character’s personality. That’s very difficult to do considering there are so many characters and each one gets a full backstory to explain their motives and how they act.  

However there were some things that I didn’t like about this book. While I thought Evie had a very refreshing voice, she is a selfish character. She gets called out on this, she knows it’s true, but we don’t really see that change. I really thought we were going to see her grow and consider other peoples feelings, and I was disappointed when that didn’t happen. This leads me to another point that is I genuinely do not understand why anyone (specifically Mabel) is friends with Evie. I also found that because there were so many characters that I would forget details and need to flip through what I had already read to remember. Which is a surefire way to take me out of the story.

But all in all I thought this book was so unique and I highly recommend it. I can’t wait to end this review so I can pick up Lair of Dreams!
