Are you still taking prompts? Because if you are, I'd like one where the rest of the bridge crew finds out that bones and jim are together. Bonus points for fluff =D
I’m ALWAYS taking prompts :p
Oh I like this one. Permission alter cannon and bring in the feels, Captain?
They weren’t trying to hide it, it just never came up. They’d been friends, then slowly but surely more than friends, until finally they landed at freakishlycodependant.
It was common knowledge that Jim and Bones were attached at the hip, which is why instead of calling Spock, like was Scotty’s first instinct upon realizing what exactly Jim had just done… he called Bones.
And Bones, for his part, had never run faster in his entire life. He knew something was wrong, absolutely knew it, could feel it in his… well, in his bones from the second the ship stabilized.
And something was very, very wrong. There was literally nothing more wrong in any universe, any timeline, than James Tiberius Kirk dying.
Bones didn’t have to be a doctor to know that there was no coming back from the amount of radiation Jim had just been subjected to. “Scotty… Can we?” His voice was raw, choked, but Jim heard it, cracking his reddened eyes open as Scotty shook his head and stepped back to give the pair their privacy.
Bones dropped next to the glass, unable to keep his legs functioning when he was sure his heart was dying. “Jim…”
"Hiya, Bones." Jim’s lips twitched into a small, painful smile. "How’s our ship?"
Bones swallowed hard past the lump in his throat. “Fine. The ship’s fine, the crew is fine. They’re all fine.” Or they would be, until they found out exactly what it took to fix the warp core. “You saved us, Jim.”
"Good." Jim breathed, shutting his eyes slowly.
“Jim! Stay with me, Jim.” Bones slapped his hand against the glass. “You’re gonna be okay, Jim.” He lied, “I can fix this! I can -“
"Bones." Jim interrupted, eyes fluttering back open and focusing on Bones as best they could. "Bones, we both know you can’t."
"I could! I just.. I just need time!” Bones shook his head, squeezing his eyes shut and clamping down on the raw panic eating his gut. He was going to throw up.
"We both know time is the one thing we don’t have right now." Jim’s hand moved slowly up to his neck to pull the thin silver chain from under his shirt, the platinum ring dangling off the end catching light as it swung. "I’m sorry, Bones. We should have gotten the chance to-"
"I know." Bones tugged his own ring free. "We could have done it in Iowa."
"We could have done it anywhere. I wouldn’t have cared." Jim’s voice was failing. Bones heard Nyota gasp behind him, heard the soft exclamation Spock let escape, heard the soft sob from Chekov and the muffled thump of him slumping into Sulu, but he couldn’t bring himself to care.
He promised himself he would never let someone he loved die in front of him again. He pressed his hand to the glass again, the hard metal of the ring digging into his palm. “Stay with me, Jim.”
Jim’s eyes opened again, slower, and he pressed his hand to the glass opposite Bones’, his own ring caught between. If he tried hard enough Bones could imagine that the glass warmed slightly at the touch. “I’m so tired, Bones.”
"I know, darlin’. I know. But you can’t… I can’t, Jim. I can’t live without you."
"You have to." Jim’s eyes closed again, only to open again immediately. "I love you, Leonard McCoy." And his eyes were closing again. Bones savored every sliver of blue he could still see, tried to commit the exact shade to his memory; he knew he wouldn’t be seeing it again.
"Jim! I love you, Jim Kirk. I love you. Please don’t… Please."
But it was too late. Jim’s hand slipped from the glass. Bones’ hand stayed where it was.
Nyota’s hand found it’s way onto his shoulder. “How long were you…?”
"Since the academy." Bones voice broke and his fingers closed around the ring. "We were gonna… he asked me to marry him. Before Khan." He stood. "When the door unlocks get him to Med-bay. I can’t…. I need to…"
"Go." Spock said. "We will make sure The Captain… Make sure Jim get’s to medical.”
Sulu nodded his confirmation from where he was still trying to console the shaking Chekov, who had bonded immediately with Jim over being considered too young for the positions they held. Jim had become kind of an older brother for him.
Bones doesn’t remember how he made it to his office; all he could remember about the time between leaving Engineering and dropping into his desk chair was wondering how something could possibly hurt so much without outright killing him.
And then… then the Tribble purred.
(Leonard McCoy and Jim Kirk were married in Starfleet Medical, surrounded by the crew of the USS Enterprise exactly an hour after Jim woke up.)
I don’t know. I just feel like if I was Scotty in that situation I would have called Bones, and then Spock. And then of course the rest of the bridge crew because HELLO. Family. Ohana means family, guys.
ABOUT THOSE BONUS POINTS FOR FLUFF. DO THEY COUNT FOR TEARS? BECAUSE THERE WERE TEARS.
I MEANT TO MAKE IT FLUFFY BUT THEN THIS JUST HAPPENED AND OOPS. I FEEL LIKE I DISHONORED THAT SMILEY FACE IN THE PROMPT
