Ser Willem Darry
so I just realized that dany compares both willem darry and jorah to bears, specifically in the context of fatherly figures. except while ser willem was *actually* a fatherly figure to her, jorah uses dany’s trust in him to prey on her.
dany about willem darry:
“She remembered Ser Willem dimly, a great grey bear of a man, half-blind, roaring and bellowing orders from his sick bed.” (AGOT, Daenerys I)
“His big wrinkled hand reached for her, soft as old leather, and Dany wanted to take it and hold it and kiss it, she wanted that as much as she had ever wanted anything. Her foot edged forward, and then she thought, He’s dead, he’s dead, the sweet old bear, he died a long time ago. She backed away and ran.” (ACOK, Daenerys IV)
dany about jorah (a few examples of many)
“My great bear, Dany thought. I am his queen, but I will always be his cub as well, and he will always guard me. It made her feel safe, but sad as well. She wished she could love him better than she did.” (ACOK, Daenerys II)
“They betrayed me. But they saved me. But they lied. ‘You go . . . ’ My bear, my fierce strong bear, what will I do without him?” (ASOS, Daenerys V)
“This is Jorah, my fierce bear, the right arm that never failed me. I would be dead without him, but . . . ‘I can’t forgive you,’ she said. ‘I can’t.’” (ASOS, Daenerys VI)
“Farewell, old bear. Farewell, betrayer.” (ASOS, Daenerys VI)
“And what did that make Ser Jorah, her gruff old bear? Would she never have a friend that she could trust?” (ADWD, Daenerys VI)
“My bear, she thought, my old sweet bear, who loved me and betrayed me.” (ADWD, Daenerys X)
the first quote is particularly upsetting because—even though dany is aware of jorah’s romantic and sexual feelings towards her—she believes that he thinks of her as “his cub” first and foremost. despite how openly jorah desires her, dany still considers their relationship to primarily be that of a father and daughter (a belief that jorah clearly does not share).
and that’s one of the many reasons why jorah’s betrayal is so unforgivable. how can a 15 year old girl process her feelings about a relationship if the lines between platonic vs fatherly vs romantic vs sexual love are constantly blurred? when there’s no boundary between their professional vs personal relationship? jorah supposedly shows her every type of “love” there is, and he still betrays her. like no wonder dany has trust issues.
all dany wants is a parent to love and protect her, and instead she gets a pedophile. oh my baby girl.
My latest Daenerys & Viserys drawing led me to want to go further back in Daenerys' story to portray two important characters in her (very) early life.
The first is her mom Rhaella !
And the second is Willem Darry, who stole her & her brother out of Dragonstone when she was an infant. The one she nickname her sweet old bear 💔
A mother and a sort of father !

Mothers of the dragon, Protectors of the dragon, Tormentors of the dragon
I started this piece months ago and dropped it, but I picked it back up and powered through recently. I just wanted to play on the themes of three and show the similarities between the figures in the lives of Jon, Dany, and Tyrion.
A young Targaryen princess, married off in her teenage years to a cold, capricious man she barely understands for the sake of power and prophecy. She suffers abuse and pain at the hands of this husband and takes comfort in her handmaidens and is lusted after by one knight and loved and protected by another. After her husband finally dies, the princess goes to a place of salt and smoke and becomes the mother of someone who will help to save the world from the ultimate evil threat of the Others.
Tell me, friends. Am I describing the late, lamented Rhaella Targaryen…or her daughter Daenerys?

A Game of Thrones, Daenerys I
She did not remember Dragonstone either.
They had run again, just before the Usurper’s brother set sail with his new-built fleet.
By then only Dragonstone itself, the ancient seat of their House, had remained of the Seven Kingdoms that had once been theirs. It would not remain for long.
The garrison had been prepared to sell them to the Usurper, but one night Ser Willem Darry and four loyal men had broken into the nursery and stolen them both, along with her wet nurse, and set sail under cover of darkness for the safety of the Braavosian coast.
