Running is a Lifestyle Choice
When I got to high school, I decided to sign up for both cross country and track, both coached by Coach Kelly Williams. Throughout the regular season and off season, Coach Williams showed admirable dedication to the sport of running and her runners, continually offering a plethora of services to her runners. Coach Williams is also invaluable to the community for her role in promoting health and childhood activity. In her roles both outside and inside her declared title of coach, Kelly Williams is arguably the most influential and productive coach in western Georgia.
In 1999, Coach Williams aspired to create an afterschool running program for elementary school children. Primarily, its mission was to promote activity in the progressively more obese youth, but it also exposed children to running as a sport, instead of part of another sport. This program was titled Road Runners. Within the past fifteen years, the Road Runners program has flourished at its original school and been adopted by nearly 30 other schools in the west Georgia area, creating some of the state’s most talented runners. For me, as with many others, membership in Road Runners was not only a way to stay healthy, but an outlet through which I discovered my athletic passion.
During both cross country and track season, Coach William’s affection for both the sport and the success of her athletes proliferated through her determination to make us the fastest team. She input countless hours researching and developing the most productive training schedules while also providing us with as many utilities for success as possible. If we needed a ride, we could count on her. If we needed personal training, she would be there. Even if we needed help with academics, she was only a phone call away. Coach Williams ceased to put herself before any of her athletes or students.
To be as passionate as Coach Williams nearly guarantees success. Since she started the track and cross country program in 1999 at Chapel Hill High School, she has coached fourteen individual state champions and five team state titles. One of the state champions was even disciplined enough to set a national record, running a five kilometer cross country race at a groundbreaking time of 14 minutes and 43 seconds. Nearly every year, Coach William’s teams claim regional and sectional titles, always a team to watch out for.
On top of her coaching career, Coach Williams has been a respiratory therapist for nearly thirty years, helping patients in various hospitals and offices in west Georgia. Her ability to continually devote endless amounts of time to both the success of her teams as well as her medical practice is truly inspirational. As an aspiring physician assistant, I can only hope to live a life as medically and locally successful, hopefully while spreading my adoration of running.
