liam narrating “orym, a complete bloody mess, pushes himself up. hex is gone. he can barely move. he’s exhausted.” and his voice breaking as he continues “but his father wouldn’t stop protecting his friends, and neither would his husband.” and ashley saying “oh my god.” as she immediately goes through all the stages of grief,,, yeah

I want to talk more about Will as a character later but:
It’s occurred to me that Will, in some ways, is Orym’s Orym. The steady, calming presence who will listen with patience, offer reasoned solutions, and when needed, take decisions out of your hands.
Will is to Orym what Orym is to everyone else.
Okay but like.
The sword a gift delivered by the Wild Mother.
The sword is sentimental. Something I'm sure from his family, and that he thinks about them looking at it and using it.
And it was sensing Will that brought him toward the statue.
What if the Wild Mother was helping Will to reach out?
I'm still thinking about everything we know about orym in retrospect after finding out about his husband, and it's all driving me nuts
because he never seemed extraordinary, right? he was just a person doing his duty to his people... but knowing what we know now, like Chetney said, this is personal, so he fights and he searches because of his duty to his husband too, which is a noble and justifiable endeavor in itself but but the way he does it???
I mean he's strong and loyal and he puts himself between his friends and danger so easily like it's a given, but he does it all while holding his grief so gracefully somehow, not losing himself to it but feeling it still, he does it all while remaining gentle and kind, while keeping his heart open to new people– all of which makes him extraordinary I think
and can you imagine the image this presents? like imagine being Fearne and Dorian and having this soft-spoken, unassuming person who they thought was just a responsible soldier tell them about this? that he's not only bound by honor and loyalty to his cause as an Ashari, but that he's also fiercely loyal to his heart's cause? especially after seeing how stoic he's been despite the private grief he so obviously feels, and how he's been working hard and without complaint to protect them, despite not even knowing them for long– I mean, hell I'd be inspired to join him too
it seemed from the conversation with Chetney that a part of him had already come to accept what had happened, that it was an inevitability as soldiers, they'd 'accepted their duty with eyes wide open' after all, which explains some of his attitude as well– but I expect he still feels guilty because he couldn't protect Will, it's impossible not to, so a part of this journey is probably about atonement for him too
but I'm glad the guilt isn't eating him up, and I'm glad he's kind enough to himself to not be alone, and I'm glad he gets to go on this quest to look for answers, especially after years of being at a standstill and having no leads and no closure
I hope having the chance to finally lay his husband to rest can help him heal too, because that's a hell of a burden to carry at all, let alone one to carry so gently
more smooches, it's orym's turn bc I just wanted to draw my littlest guy getting tossed around in various ways.
first kiss - first real kiss - first kiss as husbands - last kiss
