NYSM Halloween Headcanons

featuring a lot of ideas from @manisanythingnottaken because we were yapping abt this together

(cough sorry it's two days late)

Jack loves Halloween. Like he loves dressing up and walking around New York, and even before he was with the Horsemen and actually had money and someplace to live, he would buy dollar store make up and throw on what he could for a costume to wear

When he finally has money, he dresses up super elaborately and brings bags of candy to hand out to anybody he sees in a cool costume-- kids and adults alike

Henley loved Halloween when she was a little girl, but hadn't celebrated in years beyond the occasional themed show, but when she moves in with the rest of the horsemen Jack is so excited that she gets into the spirit

She makes a GORGEOUS and elaborate costume, and she also helps make Jack's costume

Danny is against this. He does not like the idea of dressing up, nor of going out into the city at night with the sole idea of interacting with strangers

He is dragged along against his will

Danny's sentiments being "This is ridiculous. I'm nearly thirty years old, I'm not dressing up like-- like a child."

Merritt thinks he's too old for Halloween but loves seeing them happy, so he throws on a costume and goes along with them

Merritt, when out with them, is one of those adults who just LIGHTS UP at kids costumes and is like "Oh my GOD it can't be! It's really (obscure character) from my favorite show (nichest kids show you've ever heard of)???!!!"

The kids love him

Danny doesnt want to go out because he's partially embarrassed and partially because he's Incredibly Easily Scared on Halloween

Like, he gets scared by those things that are movement sensing and start talking. He spends the entire night on edge and gets genuinely freaked out by ppl in rlly good horror costumes

All three of the other horsemen spend 90% of the night upon realizing this teasing him and offering to hold his hand

Jack, on the other hand, may or may not end up breaking several things when being startled. He punches when he's snuck up on

They go to a haunted house without knowing this

A mistake.

Jack and Danny had to get one of those "scaredy cat" signs due to Danny having the heartrate of a rabbit and Jack just narrowly missing punching one of the scareactors in the nose

He messed up an actors costume at some point and felt SO bad he apologized immediately

He has a hell of a time, though. He'd never been to a haunted house and even though he couldn't experience it normally he had a lot of fun, especially watching the others gets startled by things

The three of them try to warn Danny to jumpscares

This has the adverse effect of making Danny overthink, panic, spin around in a circle, and then miss seeing the jumpscare until it's too late

Jack tapped him on the shoulder in warning once halfway through the haunted house and he genuinely shrieked

They spent a long time trying to decide what costumes to wear

Danny was going to just go in normal attire, and Merritt was planning to do the same but then pull out like a "im (random character from some show in the 80s thats just like a normal guy)" when asked what he was wearing

Henley and Jack brainstormed group/couples costumes and wound up remembering Alice in Wonderland exists

Henley was GOING to be Alice, but decided that the Queen of Hearts sounded way more fun to design and wear

Jack went with the Cheshire cat, the purple one not hte blue one because he has taste

They convinced Danny to be the White Rabbit, and stuck cheap bunny ears on his head and a cotton fluff ball to the back of his coat. He wore just like a formal suit sort of outfit and this giant painted cardboard clock Jack made for him

Merritt was the Mad Hatter and while his costume was simple it was obvious who he was supposed to be. He wore one of his many hats but Jack tied a scarf around it and stuck playing cards into it with pins

They all incorporate cards into their costumes, for obvious reasons

Henley spends forty minutes figuring out how to make her hair do the queen of hearts thing while still looking good and eventually has to recruit Danny to help her finish it because he's weirdly good with hair

Danny has to recruit Merritt who is ALSO good with hair because he needs a second pair of hands

Henley and Jack went to every thrift store in the city looking for the perfect coat and pocket watch for Merritt's costume. They had a lot of fun doing it

Jack, Henley, and Merritt all tease Danny about how in character he is as the White Rabbit because he tends to get so up in arms about being on schedule

Jack spends a lot of the night doing card tricks for kids. Danny eventually joins in on this

They walk around the city all carrying candy and handing it out to anybody they see in costume, and midway through the night they notice a group in… familiar attire and wigs

They meet four people dressed up as the Four Horsemen

They are delighted

The cosplayers don't realize they're actually talking to THE horsemen at first and just think they've met other fans who think their cosplays are cool

Jack makes a comment saying "Wow, that really looks like my jacket, and you got my stage hair down perfectly, man!"

Cue "…YOUR jacket?"

They don't believe him. He ends up having to do a trick for them. Then they believe that it's Jack and take advantage of the four of them being there by being like "ok you all have to prove it"

Danny is offended they don't recognize him and ends up doing some absolute physics breaking bullshittery to awe them

They sign the deck of cards that cosplay!Jack had with him and part ways

NYSM Headcanons 3

Food/Domestic edition! This features the original four horsemen from the first movie

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 (You're here!) Part 4 Part 5 - Halloween Edition Part 6 Part 6.1 - Weed Edition Part 6.2 - December Holidays Edition

- Henley can make AMAZING pancakes and waffles

- She gatekept her recipe/method for MONTHS and then found out that Jack had never made pancakes OR waffles before (never had the chance to) and they spent the day all four of them in the kitchen cooking pancakes

- This resulted in terrible pancake art and a lot of burnt food going into the bin

- Merritt is the designated cook, and he loves making anything Italian. He cooks 90% of their meals and has banned both Danny and Jack from the kitchen after the former burned past and the latter made an unholy abomonation of food combos

- Jack can make really basic food like scrambled eggs and pasta, but it's always super mid tier. He makes healthy/fuel-filled food and doesnt really prioritize

- He has super white taste buds and complains about Merritt's food a lot until he gets used to it

- Danny has white AND autistic taste buds and nobody could figure out why he wasn't eating the food Merritt made for, like, a *while* and thought he was just being a dick until they figured it out one day. Merritt started dishing Danny up before he seasoned the dish

- Danny is insecure that he can't cook, because he thinks it SHOULD be super simple but it just isn't for him

- Henley and Danny are both organizational control freaks, and after one too many fights Merritt separated them and basically went "Henley you get the cabinets and pantry, Danny you get the fridge and the drawers, now SHHUT UP" because he does not approve of fighting in his sacred space

- Jack is not allowed to put away dishes. Jack puts away dirty dishes because "They're not that dirty??". Jack puts away dishes after scraping dried food bits out of them with his nail and considers that clean

- Also Merritt semi intentionally puts dishes away in the wrong spot, so Danny and Henley are the only two allowed to put away foor or dishes.

- Jack puts away empty containers of food because he doesn't really think about it.

- Jack LOVES those big tins of popcorn you can get around christmas

- Henley buys one for their first holiday season together and comes out the next morning to find that Jack has eaten all the caramel corn and most of the rest of it

- Danny, on the contrary, fucking hates popcorn due to sensory issues

- He always gets kernals in his teeth and it drives him nuts

- Jack gets uncomfortable with well made food and doesn't like it near as much as the comfort of shitty, cheap, and/or greasy food 

- Eventually he associates Merritt's cooking with safety/home and is more comfortable with it

- Jack loves horrible food combos such as ketchup and apples

NYSM Headcanons 2

Language/Writing Style edition! this features headcanons for all the original four characters from the first movie

Part 1 Part 2 (You're here!) Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 - Halloween Edition Part 6 Part 6.1 - Weed Edition Part 6.2 - December Holidays Edition

- Jack can speak Spanish and knows a good amount of ASL from living/being on the streets of New York - His bio parents taught him German, but he isn’t entirely fluent in it and is super rusty with it since he’s not really spoken it in some time

- Danny's first language isn't English and that's why he can't be hypnotized in English (stolen from @manisanythingnottaken hehe) but rather Polish and he knows Latin, some French, and textbook Spanish, and enjoys just. learning/knowing languages

- Henley speaks French fluently, she was raised bilingual French and English

- She also has a French accent-- at least a mild one-- but she makes an effort to cover it up most of the time

- Everyone is shocked to hear her sounding super French one night when they're either drunk or super tired

- Danny learned French because of Henley

- Merritt knows Italian and a healthy amount of Spanish - Merritt also knows German because he and Chase wanted to learn a language together when they were little (around 10-ish) that nobody else knew so it was like a secret, and they thought German sounded funny because of how aggressive it was

- Danny has incredibly neat handwriting

- Henley has a really really elegant cursive that's just super beautiful and Jack cannot, for the life of him, decipher it

- Merritt is great at copying handwritings and so he tends to shift in writing style a lot but has a pretty generic default script, if a little messy

- Jack's default is chicken scratch, it's a bunch of different bits and bobs from different fonts crammed together and worse than that all his letters in a single word are connected because he rarely picks up his pen/pencil

- Jack also has a red ballpoint pen he prefers to use - He lost it once and was upset asf abt it and used one of Henley’s red colored pencils instead

NYSM Headcanons

- Jack, without fail any time he's sitting or laying somewhere, has a blanket on him. Usually a decently heavy one for comfort.

- Danny and Henley are their designated drivers. Danny prefers driving at night because he DOES find it relaxing to be in full control of the vehicle but gets anxious and uncomfortable when there're a lot of other people on the road, so Henley drives during the day

- Merritt CAN drive but doesnt enjoy it just because he doesn't like sitting in the drivers seat, so he complains if he's made to drive. He usually spends drives in the backseat sprawled out with Jack being annoying or sleeping.

- Jack has 100% perfected walking silently, and will have any creaky steps in a house mapped out within a day of being there. He can also walk on creaky floors without making them creek a good chunk of the time because he knows how to step

- He makes an effort to be loud when he isn't tired, but his version of walking loudly to alert people of his arrival and everyone elses are drastically different so he gives up after a few months of failing to not scare people when entering a room

- Jack ALSO recognizes peoples footsteps, and none of the other horsemen figure out how he's greeting them by name before he even sees or hears them for a few weeks. Jack doesn't realize it's weird to know someone by how they walk

- This makes Danny uncomfortable, and he makes an effort to change his walkstyle. It doesn't help

- Jack can mimic voices crazy well, to the point that if you don't know him that well/haven't heard his voice a lot or don't know he can do it he can completely copy a voice

- He manages to trick all of the other horsemen with it for a good while before they started to recognize the underlying tone of his actual voice in his mimics and it stopped working

- Jack LOVES betting and competing. He's super competitive, but he's not a sore loser by any means. He's mostly not a sore loser because he always wins, though

- Henley varies on whether or not she's a sore loser or super competitive based on her mood and what they're doing

- Danny is an incredibly sore loser but is mostly competitive when it comes to being smart and languages and shit like that

- Their primary apartment pre-canon has a single loveseat and a lazyboy, and 90% of the time they're all piled onto the couch together. Danny is usually perched on the arm, Henley is always in the middle if it's Danny and Merritt on either side but on the outer edge if Jack is involved. Jack tends to lay on everyones laps or kick his feet up on people when sitting on the loveseat

- When he isn't in a cuddly mood the lazyboy is basically just "Jack's chair" because he's the one who sits in it the most

- Jack has a deck of standard playing cards that are purple/magenta instead of red/black and they're basically his emotional support deck. He always has it on him, and he only uses it for fidgeting. It's super worn and flexible from so much messing with.

- Henley loves adult coloring books and coloring pencils, and she keeps a small collection of them by the loveseat in the living room. Jack picks them up one day when he's bored and finds he also enjoys it, so the two of them occasionally share colored pencils and color in the living room while watching tv together.

- Danny is REALLY good at chess, and has a lot of playstyles/strategies memorized. He spends the entire game thinking seven steps ahead

- Henley knows the basics and is kinda just a casual player, but finds the game a little boring

- Merritt doesn't really enjoy playing chess that much, but he's good at playing against overthinkers. He expected an easy win with Danny, only to find that Danny is the overthinker of all overthinkers. It was the first time he lost to someone playing chess in a long time

- Jack was the next person he lost to. For the opposite reason. Jack knows "this piece does that" and that is literally it. He makes stupid moves and somehow wins a game every once in a while through sheer stupidity. Danny and Merritt hate playing against them because neither of them can predict his moves.

- Merritt is, naturally, very good at playing poker

- The horsement, as a result, do not play poker

- Henley was mostly a loner in school, she had her small clique of friends and that was enough for her, but she got bullied by girls in that way where someone fakes being your friend because they think it's funny

- Jack was bullied for being the quiet kid everyone thought might shoot up the school one day. He was creepy and weird and gangly as a kid

- Danny was stereotypically bullied

- Merritt and Chase were bullied, but only ever separately because eveyrone knew not to mess with them if they were together

- Merritt put an end to his bullying in his second year of highschool when he psychoanalyzed and picked apart every piece of his bullies trauma and issues and freaked him out so bad he fucked off

- Jack has awful oral hygiene because he isn't used to keeping up with it

- Henley, Merritt, and Danny make an effort to body double with him to help him brush his teeth in the form of dragging him out to do so in the mornings and at night when *they're* getting ready for bed

- But weirdly he doens't have that many issues despite having bad oral hygiene. like maybe one cavity

NYSM Headcanons 4

Now it's disability/angst edition WOOO featuring original four horsemen from the first movie

this is weirdly a short list as someone who REALLY likes disability hcs and its mostly jack and danny but henley and merritt have a couple ones in here too :3

- Jack is AuDHD

- Danny is Autistic and has OCD that's especially germ focused

- Danny was diagnosed as autistic at like 7 and then undiagnosed himself and says he "Grew out of it" (thank @manisanythingnottaken for their genius)

- He has not.

- Danny will NOT pick up on subtleties. If you want him to do something or go somewhere you have to say it outright or he will not realize you want something of him

- Henley knows this beforehand and has to tell Jack and Merritt when they get individually frustrated over it

- Jack has an old injury in his left knee that acts up occasionally making him limp because it hurts like a bitch, but he can power through it easily. When the others find out they tend to needle him into sitting down

- Danny gets migraines

- Danny also tries to hide said migraines even when they’re genuinely debilitating, and takes nothing more than advil (ty @manisanythingnottaken for the inspiration/hc that im somewhat stealing)

- He only gets auras some of the time, and he frequently has pain so bad he throws up and he absolutely hates it

- Henley has a terrible immune system and gets sick all the time, it's one of the reasons she's always wearing her gloves. She's very careful not to touch her face with unwashed hands

- Jack is dyslexic and has mega astigmatism. like it's really bad

- Jack has issues with being touched when he isn't expecting it/it isn't telegraphed, and if he's not reigning himself in/paying enough attention he'll react with violence

- Merritt has issues standing/sitting up for long periods of time thanks to joint and bone health issues

- He also struggles with breathing in shitty air quality because he used to smoke a shit ton between 16 and 30

- Jack has way too much trauma for a 20 year old and spent about four years prior to meeting the other horsemen on the street after running away from a his foster home

- Jack has AWFUL audio processing issues and is 100% someone who every other sentence goes “What?” and then answers you when youre partway through repeating yourself

- He always has subtitles on when watching tv otherwise he will just not at all know what’s going on

- Henley finds out he’s partially deaf in one ear. He did not know this, she figured it out because he tended to default to the one with better hearing subconsciously

- Merritt already knew but thought Jack knew and wasn’t comfortable saying anything
