One of the best feelings in the world is realizing you have an extra hour until rehearsal because they’re playing the one piece you’re not in 👌🏽🎉💩🎇🎆
Recently I was asked for advice on playing a wind instrument while binding your chest, and I thought why not share it with the internet as well! I sometimes wear a binder, I play bassoon, and I do occasionally do those things at the same time.
The most important thing to be comfortable while playing and binding is that your binder does NOT bind your stomach as well as your chest (like Underworks full binders, for example.) You can’t take a full breath to play like that because everything that expands while breathing normally is constricted. Feeling like you’re exercising hard after 15 seconds of playing because it’s so hard to support your sound is just awful. Once I got a GC2B binder it was so much easier for me to play, and any half binder would also work fine, I’m sure.
There will be some figuring out how to adjust your breathing at first. It will probably feel like you’re taking bigger breaths than normal, but that comes with the territory of having your chest squeezed. And hey, this will probably help you keep your lung capacity over time if you’re binding regularly.
Remember to listen to your body! If something hurts, stop immediately. Take breaks if you can. It’s smart to start with shorter periods of time and work up to longer times wearing your binder (although I didn’t really do that and I was okay but I don’t bind every day.) Try your very best not to wear it for more than 8 hours at a time. Now go play the snot out of your etudes like the boss you are!!
Also, if anyone else has other advice or tips please feel free to add on to this post because while I have knowledge about binding, breathing technique is just... hard for me to explain? And I’ve never done a post like this before haha
Question to all Female Wind Players
What kind of bra do you wear??
On a full day of rehearsal I more often than not have to take mine off half way through because I can't breathe... what do you do?? Any tips? Any especially comfortable bras? Or do you just go without?

I like to blow things for a couple of hours every day to build up my technique.
