This kitchen in a 1960s Hollywood Hills home was updated the present, while retaining traces of a "groovier" era: cobalt-blue-painted window frames, terra-cotta tiles for countertop and back-splash, and stippled green linoleum floors. The cabinets are slab wood painted a faux grain finish, with wrought-iron hardware.

With little effort, flat board stock can be turned into distinctive trim. In this house, standard molding was added to side and head trim to add character and depth. The homeowner developed the idea for the curtain-rod attachment at the windows.
