What Actually Happens When You Delete a File in the Cloud?

We delete files all the time.

The cloud may feel abstract, but behind it are real machines storing real physical data.

When you delete a file, cloud providers don’t simply press a magical erase button.

Instead, they use a combination of:

>> software, >> encryption, >> storage management, >> and sometimes even physical destruction

to ensure your data is eventually gone for good.

So the next time you click “Delete,” remember.

Now you see, if we were a serious civilization, we would learn from the Crowdstrike/Windows IT outage and realize that a society where one program having a bug can shut down the whole world is stupid. And we would probably move to decentralize, and try to be self-sufficient, so that food getting on our table is not wholly dependent on any single service.

But that's a very big if.
