It's invasive D:< wine berry, brought over from Asia to hybridize with native raspberries and escaped captivity >:[

The berries are edible, but I’m going to do my best to kill this plant and replace it with a native raspberry plant, since it’s invasive and it does not need to be allowed to spread further.

I have a little baby black raspberry plant, I’ll plant it there until I can get a red raspberry plant. Not that the birds probably care about the difference.

I also threw some seed bombs with blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry seeds in them. But yeah I am definitely digging this plant up when I get the chance.

If you guerilla garden, remember to only plant native plants to your area. Planting invasive species defeats the purpose and does more harm than good. In your own gardens, try to grow native species, and make sure birds cannot eat the fruits of invasive species. That’s how this happens :[

It’s wineberry season in Virginia! Unfortunately, wineberries, Rubus phoenicolasius, are not native to North America, but actually come from China, Japan, and Korea. The berries are really good, though, very sweet and flavorful. The plant is nearly unmistakable, with the stems covered in red glandular hairs in addition to slender prickles. The leaves 3-foliate and densely white-tomentose (fuzzy) underneath. I’ve not tried making any sort of tart with the berries, but I imagine they’d be good for this. Eat as many as you can if you live in North America - every berry you eat means fewer seeds spreading this invasive plant!
