Vacu Vin Concerto Wine Saver Review
Vacu Vin Concerto Wine Saver Review
As I’ve got more into wine, it often felt extravagant to open a (even a cheap) bottle of wine mid-week. What if you just want a glass to go with a meal? Are you wasting the rest? How long can it keep? Unlike my Dad, who, when I last visited seemed to have several half-drunk bottles of red lurking in a cupboard, gathering dust, I prefer to drink wine before it turns into vinegar. This was…

It’s the holiday season and the time for wine, a lot of it. Wine Enthusiasts will love to have wine before office parties, family gatherings, or holiday parties with friends. There are numerous of wine accessories which any wine connoisseur would be excited to have. Check out the 8 Accessories for the Wine Connoisseur.
Wine Wipes
Happy #WineWednesday! Although I won’t be partaking today. I’m going in for part 2 of a root canal tomorrow and really don’t want to face the dentist with a wine headache. It’s bad enough going to the dentist (my greatest fear), so I’ll be saving the wine guzzling for after the torture session. I’m back after a few years away from weekly wine blog posts. I’ve decided to bring back this fun event,…

Vibes + Vino: Wine Gadgets You Don’t Really Need
Two opposite forces that work overtime within me are the forces to be and not be inclined to get hype over miscellaneous branding/packaging efforts in the same way I get hype whenever Sister Nancy’s "Bam Bam" smashes any DJ set.
However, there are a few gadgets and things that, while by initial insight may seem sort of quirky cool, are altogether not really worth the time to mess with. Here are some things that might make you go “whoa”, but just say “no”, alright?
1. The Power Drill Corkscrew (and any novelty corkscrew for that matter)
Eye-catching, but fast-breaking. Just a simple waiter’s corkscrew (Pulltap, double-hinged) can be your BFF. Sidenote, if I’m ever in a bind, running late to work a tasting, I quickly grab one at the Mariano’s nearby for 5 bucks and it gets the work done. I mention this because while the foil cutter might crap out eventually, just imagine how many wine bottles 10-20 bucks can get you through, if you already could get through a substantial amount with just 5 bucks. Point is, fancy doesn’t necessarily always mean better.
2. Electric Wine Chillers. Or, the Corksicle
These can get your wine cool in half an hour. Which is essentially how fast a standard refrigerator chills your wine. Submerging the sucker in salted ice water is your best bet actually. Grade school science FTW.
3. Decorative wine/spirits stoppers
Resist the urge! You’ll convince yourself they’re “too pretty” to pass up, but 90% of the time these stoppers are much smaller in diameter than your bottle of wine, at times even smaller than that of a standard Riesling bottle. They'll oxidate all that beloved juice as fast as Twista throws down a verse.
If you’re hell bent on finding cutesy stoppers instead of more practical options though (i.e. Vac-U-Vin, WineSavor, sticking the cork back in the bottle, or y’know, just not leaving any leftovers to begin with), you may look into some of the following ideas:
A. WineFolly has a few simple and classy stoppers she sells at her online store.
B. Find varying stopper sizes at your local craft store and do a little DIY of your own. Cupcakes & Cashmere has a fool proof DIY step-by-step here, but the key is finding the correct sizes to fit your needs.
C. As for the bubbly stuff, look into getting a sparkling wine stopper or two. They look pretty futuristic for something so simple, and loo, this one is only 6 bucks!
4. Single-temperature or used wine fridges
While you may save some serious dinero, here are my two gripes about both: The downside of a single temperature fridge is in its name, there’s no dial you can mess with. Sauvignon Blanc will get stored at the same temperature as your Gewurztraminer. Not cool. And as for used, while I’m a used buying enthusiast and frequent second-hand shops, I wouldn’t go that route for a fridge. You have no idea how it has been calibrated nor the kind of life left on the compressor -- there’s just too many question marks, too many variables. And if you’re like me, who currently lives in a space 5x smaller than the corner bodega, all I really can mess with at the moment is reconfiguring a closet and the future idea of investing in a small multi-temperature fridge that will store the special stuff anyway. Here’s a useful article on how to store wine without a cellar.
5. Novelty Aerators
Tends to be controversial topic in general in wine talks in comparison to standard wine decanters, and honestly, a decanter is much easier and, for lack of better words, seems classier. It simply takes patience. On top of that, it seems each brand claims to be one to aerate a wine “properly” but there is no one formula for this, it’s varies wine to wine. With a decanter, you have a broader scope of controlling how your wine is aerated. But, if the hyperdecanting thing really tickles your fancy, Tim Ferris has a few unconventional suggestions, including one involving an immersion blender, on his 4 Hour Workweek blog. Weird, but at least it’s a gadget that’ll pay for itself even after you make that chimichurri or pasta sauce for dinner.
What will I spend my hard-earned dinero on though? First, quality wine glasses (several of which I have found at TJMaxx or in the Home Goods clearance section… and notice how I said quality not novelty. Second, padded wine totes. Three, the Coravin.
So while there are several wine accessories out there that aren’t worth the time, this song always will be, so I’ll top off to that.
The holiday season is always crazy for your favorite somms, wine retailer and wine savvy event planners, etc. So give them a gift they will really want and actually use. Sure, it's the thought that counts, but wouldn't you feel better knowing they could really use and love your gift? Most of my "wine friends" are well stocked on the items stated in the introductory section of the attached article, but there are some really great ideas for the enthusiasts and pros in this post too! If you were wondering what to get me this year, I'd like to spend time with you! Tune in to all of our previous eps and give us a quick hello on Facebook, Twitter, here on Tumblr or send us an e-mail at [email protected]. For those close, let's grab a drink or dinner soon. God knows I'm gonna need it to survive another holiday season in retail. -BJZ
