About the custom of mixing wine

I see people taking at face value the fact that the Greeks mixed their wine with water as some type of dietary restriction and it bothers me because this lacks so much context. 

Modern wines don’t need to be mixed, I promise you. Of course it can be a ritual gesture for certain festivals, if you wish it so, but generally speaking... it’s really not necessary. 

I’ve talked about it before but I’ll say it again: Ancient wines for the most part were retsinas. That is, wine with a particular pine resin taste. If you’ve ever tried a modern retsina, you’ll know this is a very particular taste and it can be overpowering really fast. Aside from the hundred of variations of mulled wine, we also have found traces of oak (chips or resin) in ancient wine pots. Oak tends to bring out tannins (which is why oak barrels are still used for specific types of wines or other alcohols, like cognac). 

My point is: that shit was strong. You very likely ended up with something very strong in tannin and/or strong in pine taste. Of course you’d want to mix the thing. 

Not to mention that all ages drunk wine. An Athenian child would have their first sip at the Anthesteria of their 3rd year of life, which would of course be very watered down. 

Lastly, one of the reason why Athens felt very strongly about “mixed wine = civilized” is 1) because they did it and 2) because the Macedonians didn’t and it was a very good tool of political propaganda. They felt the same way about wearing pants but weirdly enough I don’t see anyone saying we should stop wearing those.

Friday's Round-Up 25 August 2017 My Girl and I spent this magnificent day hanging out together: a 6km hike around Bold Park; fish teriyaki don in Northbridge for lunch, before collecting my #city2surf racepack; and playing with the pretty Debbie-cat GG is looking after. There's my 'eclipse' breakfast shake in the mix for good measure too. That was the healthy part of the day. I had wine & cheese for dinner with my SIL & Sis. I also drank 1.2L of water to offset the wine but am not exactly bright-eyed and clear-headed on this stunning pre-Spring morning. I am about to walk to meet my Dry July support group for brunch (it's a fb group with an interest in health & fitness in fact, but some of us did Dry July, and the co-ordinator was very encouraging). I need to recollect my self-control from Dry July. Tonight must be dry ahead of City To Surf tomorrow.
