[Clarification] YG’s New Survival Program is NOT for their own Trainees + New Variety Shows for WINNER, iKON & BLACKPINK

The past few days there has been rumors circulating the web that YG Entertainment has a new “WIN: WHO IS NEXT” / “MIX & MATCH” styled survival program for YG’s male trainees. While there has been much pushback on another program to create a new YG boy band since YG already has three young groups, the company has offically responded that there has been a massive misunderstanding.

It appears that YG’s upcoming survival program is for unknown rookie idols who are NOT a part of YG Entertainment. YG CEO Yang Hyun Suk, free from his K-POP STAR judging duties, will be collaborating with Mnet “Show Me The Money”’s PD Han Dong Chul, to make a “PRODUCE 101”-style program featuring YG’s training system.

YG’s PRODUCE 101

Not a program to form a permanent group using YG’s own trainees, this show currently dubbed “YG’s PRODUCE 101” will focus on unknown/nugu rookie groups. YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk, producers Teddy and artists G-Dragon, Taeyang and Psy will participate in the show to hand-pick members from these lesser known groups to form a new group (likely to be a project group). This new initiative is the first time YG Entertainment will be working with outside labels.

YG’s Next Boy Band Survival Program

This program featuring YG’s current male trainees is apparently not going to be happening that soon. The earliest time it will happen is probably end of this year or the beginning of 2018. This program will feature 30 YG trainees including the well-known ones like Bang Yedam and Choi Raesung. 

Other YG Variety Shows Being Prepared

Besides two survival programs, YG will also be investing heavily in promoting their existing groups through self-produced variety shows. There is work being done on “iKON TV”, “BLACKPINK TV” and a new season of “WINNER TV”. YG will be having a brand new building for content and production staff, with meetings each week to discuss program ideas.
