BurdaStyle Magazine, December 2021
The cover photos offers a dressy version of the suit jacket which I blogged earlier and it brings me to the claim on the cover “208 patterns for £7.50.” This left me confused as there are about 27 patterns included on the over-printed sheets included in the middle. Then, I realized they were counting every size which is size included and every change of length. When I buy a multi-size pattern from Vogue, they don’t tell me I just bought 5 patterns, and when they show a knee-length and a mid-calf length, they don’t tell me I bought 2 patters.
But here, if you look at the schematic, you can see that 113 is the shortest version of the dress, which you see in teal, and then they length it and call it 112, and then 111 as a full-length version, and then they shorten it to a top and call it 114. You can see the same thing happens with the simple top in red and black which is 117 as a top and then 116 as a dress. This is still a good deal as you get a lot of patterns plus some articles for around $11 if you subscribe, but I would not want these people as my accountants.
You can see how nice stretch velvet looks when it is draped over the hips in that teal dress 113. And that simple top 117 illustrates that rule: simple pattern = elaborate fabric. In this case, a jersey which allows for easy movement because the sleeves are cut in one with the body. Men’s patterns are included, and you can see both Jacket 120 a traditional men’s blazer worn with far sportier elastic- waisted trousers 121 a. Knitting patterns for a color-worked men’s pullover and a boy’s cardigan are also included. All of the patterns come in multi-sizes, and the soft green double-breasted blazer 128 is in plus sizes, as is the blue midi skirt 126. It is also shown with matching trousers with full legs.
Two sewing lessons are included for the beginner: a simple sleeping bag for an infant and joggers with an elastic waist. The glossary gives advice on setting in sleeves, on resizing patterns, on working on sequinned or velvet fabrics, etc. There are also several small projects, an elf boot, a pencil case. So a lot of stuff if not 208 patterns. ;-)
All the patterns can be bought as separate pdfs, which might be slightly easier than copying from the over-printed sheet, but then the price is much higher per pattern.
