I watched one of my favorite holiday movies this evening (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation) and couldn’t help thinking that the first Winter Fete Han and Leia spend together as a couple after the war is over, Han goes full Clark Griswold about it.  This is basically the scene where the Griswold’s are looking for a tree, but in a galaxy far, far, away. 

Leia trudged through the snow, trying her best to use Han’s footprints as a guide as she followed him across the snowy field towards the woods.  It had seemed like they had been walking for kilometers from where the Falcon had landed.  Han seemed unaffected, gleefully continuing ahead of her, making his way easily through the snow, despite it coming almost to his knees.

“Han!” Leia called out through the cold air.  “Didn’t they invent Fete tree lots so people wouldn’t have to fly halfway across a system and waste half a day looking for the perfect tree?” 

Han seemed unaffected by her comment, continuing on towards the grove of evergreens, determined that he was going to find the perfect tree for them and this was the best way to get exactly what he had in mind. 

“They invented those things, sweetheart, because people forgot how to have a good ol’ fashioned fete.  We ain’t settling for some scrawny, half dead tree from some lot”. 

Leia sighed, knowing that it wouldn’t do any good fighting Han on the issue.  She was already here, pushing her way through the snow in the cold.  At least this better be worth it, she thought to herself as she pulled her scarf tighter around her face and pushed on.

Han made his way up a small incline, the surrounding trees thinning out in a small clearing and stopped.  In front of him was a perfect tree- it met all of the requirements he had envisioned- tall, full, lush and green.  And there it sat in all it’s majestic glory just waiting to be brought back home with them.

“There it is!” Han exclaimed, his voice brimming with excitement that Leia had rarely heard from him before, and never about something as simple as a fete tree

Leia caught up to Han, who was still entranced by his perfect find.  She shook the snow from her coat, patting her gloved hand against the heavy down to free the snowflakes that had collected on her sleeves. She looked up at the tree and studied it for a moment.  The top of it towered above them, it’s branches reaching up towards the gray clouds.        

“Isn’t it a little big?”  Leia asked, still trying to figure out why this particular tree was the one that had captured Han’s attention.  They had already walked past dozens of perfectly fine, and much more manageable sized, trees.

“It’s not big” Han shrugged, his confidence wavering a bit.  “It’s just full”.

Leia reached out her arm, pointing to the very top of the tree with a gloved finger.  “That thing wouldn’t even fit on the Falcon!”   

Han looked at the tree again, pride and awe returning as he took in how breathtaking the tree really was.  “It’s not going on the Falcon, sweetheart.  It’s going in our living room”.

Leia sighed and gave Han a look from the corner of her eyes.  It was a beautiful tree, despite it’s size.  It reminded her of the ones that had decorated the palace on Alderaan when she was a child, always draped in lights and garland with hundreds of sparkling ornaments tucked into the branches.  She just had never imagined having a palace sized tree in their very non-palace sized apartment.  She stepped towards Han, his arm wrapping around her shoulders as he pulled her close to his side. 

“It is beautiful” Leia admitted, taking in Han’s warmth as he held her.  Despite her layers of clothing and heavy parka, she was cold and more than ready to head back to the ship.  She looked up at Han, who was still smiling like a goofy child at his find.  “Did you bring a saw?”
