Winterruption!

The Winterruption is a game making event relying on side quests in RMN. You can check out the event here!

So I teamed up with Caz and Marimo to work on a platformer type of game. I’ve been on tile duty, Marimo is making the HUD, and Caz is making the platformer system.

Just an example of what I’ve been working on!

This is a mockup for now, but we are working on it! Caz has implemented jumping, coin collecting and all so enemies would be next for her to make (and I have one more tileset to work on)

We’re working on this until February 12th so after that, I will get back to Fragments of Mind. I’ve been working on that pretty quietly but I hope to make more progress with it soon.

Bad News/Good News: Bad news is that David is sick, and so he and I cannot come do the puppet show of Ukrainian stories tomorrow. 😷 Good news is that the last member of our trio doesn’t live with us, and can still come! 😁 So it won’t be the full puppet show, but Monika will be there to share our stories, with fun visuals to help you learn some Ukrainian words. 🥳 #ukrainianstories #winterruption https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb0odJspR9s/?utm_medium=tumblr

What a great weekend for dance. Thank you for joining us for the 2014 edition of “Pop Up Dances”, part of “Winterrruption”. We would like to thank all of the performers for their incredible energy and passion: Meredith Kalaman and Arash Khakpour, Dianna David, Natasha Gorrie, Kim Sato, Karen Flamenco, and our fearless leaders Sven and Barbara (played by Kat Single-Dain and Aaron Malkin of The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret) We would also like to thank the Net Loft, the former Fringe Office at Festival House, Origins Coffee, Dalbergia Studios and Arts Club Theatre for their hospitality over the weekend. Winterruption (Sort of) @ Granville Island

So there's been a lot of advertising lately about some big winter festival at Granville Island. Yet when I got there to check it out, maybe I missed the events, or locations altogether, but it just seemed to be business as usual...In any case, here's some snippets from the adventure anyways!

The first person I see performing when I get there is nobody other than Josh Minsky. Brandishing his usual jazzy French and English tunes, he usually manages to attract quite a crowd no matter where he goes on the island.Here's a clip of him performing "La Vie En Rose":

He has several CD's on sale, all of which are $20 each (kinda expensive, in my opinion...)

There was a pair of girls there today who were SUPER into the Valentines Day spirit, donning some heart-shaped spectacles and what not. They were dancing along to Josh's tunes, and when it came to an upbeat one, they invited everybody to dance along. I'm not afraid to admit, as silly as it is, it was quite fun....

In the spirit of Valentines, they had a handful of tulips that they'd give out to either performers or to those that danced with them. It was kind of a nice gesture! Why should the love just be for couples right? Spread the joy all around! Nothing compliments a warm fuzzy feeling better than a warm fuzzy drink (2.85 Apple Cider from Petite Ami).

One food special I did notice though was the specialty donut being offered at Lee's Donuts! For the winter festival, they're selling Red Velvet Donuts for 2.15. It was very light on the inside yet having a definitive crust to it. This thing was a lot less sweet than I had expected, as the cream cheese was only mildly so! Quite enjoyed this... Lee's was also selling some heart-shaped donuts for Valentines...one being topped with Maple and bacon bits...yum...heart attack (I kid though, it did look good).

After stuffing my face adequately, I decided to check out some more of the performers again. Within metres of leaving the market, I was pulled towards the magical tones flowing from Les Finnigan's guitar.

However, due to the torrential downpour that had begun, I had to leave him shortly after for cover! Darn...was hoping to hear him shred that thing on his song "Woodcutter"

After the rain stopped, I was pleasantly surprised to find my old favourite, Stephen Spender! I find he has a very soft, calming voice, that he claims sounds like David Gray though probably is more like early Bruce Springsteen. Enjoy this clip of him covering Babylon, by David Gray, ironically:

Lessons learned from this adventure:

-Busker's CD's that are over $15 are probably not worth it...

-HIDE your food from seagulls

-Always carry an umbrella, even if it looks sunny it can change quickly...

Most importantly though, it never hurts to be nice to others, and spread the love around. You can end up making somebody's day! :)
