Ready to defend Penelope Featherington from all of you haters:
I often find myself wondering why the book readers talk about Phillip like he’s the devil incarnate when ALL OF THE MEN ACT HORRIFICALLY IN THE BOOKS.
First we start with Simon who lied about why he couldn’t have kids and in the ensuing argument with Daphne, punched a wall next to her head and physically aggressed her.
Next we have Anthony who essentially sexually assaults Kate and then heavily pressures her into sex on their wedding night.
Now we move to Benedict who also pressures Sophie into sex and then belittles her quite heavily for declining his “offer” to be his mistress.
Then comes Colin who, after demanding that Penelope stop printing Lady Whistledown, grabs her by the arm hard enough to leave bruises when she publishes another column.
Let’s mosey on over to Michael who’s internal monologue is COVERED in declarations about coercing Francesca into having sex so she will have no choice but to marry him.
Here we come to Gareth who pursues Hyacinth on a dare from his father and then, like Michael, spends the majority of his encounters with Hyacinth thinking about how he has to have sex with her so she is stuck with him.
And finally land of Gregory who, after being rejected OUTRIGHT by Lucy during her wedding ceremony, showed up at the reception and tied her to a pipe so he could figure out why she declined him
Now I’m not saying Phillip is perfect—he’s emotionally stunted, unwilling to acknowledge his own trauma from childhood abuse, has very little sympathy for Marina’s depression or her suicide, acts in a wildly inappropriate manner during his sexual encounters with Marina, & initially pursued Eloise purely so he could avoid parenting his children—but his toxic behavior is not singular within the series.
AN OFFER FROM A GENTLEMAN, BENEDICT BRIDGERTON'S STORY WITH SOPHIE BAEK.
THE VISCOUNT WHO LOVED ME (2000)
Epilogue.
Settling. He’d spent a goodly portion of the day in his study, staring up at his father’s portrait. And he’d found himself talking. For hours on end, he’d talked to his father. He told him of his three children, of his siblings’ marriages and their children. He told him of his mother, and how she’d recently taken up painting with oils, and that she was actually quite good. And he told him of Kate, and how she’d freed his soul, and how he loved her so damn much.
In fact, there's a reason why Kanthony and Benophie are so iconic in the Bridgerton universe in general, and why their romances have resonated most deeply with the other children in the family. Simply because it's essentially stories of soulmates finding each other. At least for me. I'm the first to admit the books have many flaws. But among their strengths, I think this is one of them. And I hope the show will do justice to Benophie, just as it did to Kanthony.
i saw a tweet about how Netflix should start milking bridgerton for specials and filler episodes and I am DOWN for it so here it goes a couple of ideas Shonda SHOULD explore:
• CHRISTMAS, just imagine the whole family celebrating together 😭
• Diwali, it would be so beautiful 😭
• Birthdays
• Change of scenarios (the family visiting somewhere etc).
• Exploring traditions of their in laws (i think both Kate and Sophie would love to share with the Bridgerton things from their culture and let’s be honest, Violet would love any opportunity to make a ball.)
- also imagine Anthony trying to learn Tamil and Benedict trying to learn Korean and they both look like frustrated schoolboys and their accent is not thar awful because they actually are trying.
• Trips (Kate and Anthony in India or their six months honeymoon, Colin’s travel, if we still had the Duke it could show Simon years abroad, or maybe just something simple as the family taking a trip together.)
• Valentine Days (Was that even a thing in the Regency Era? I dunno, does it matter? Imagine a ball themed of Eternal Love and each couple having their on subplots on it like:
- Benedict struggling to get Sophie a gift because he already uncontrollably gifts her something constantly and doesn’t want to seem like any other day gift.
- Francesca composing a special piece for Michaela but being shy to show it properly so she just starts playing around the house CONSTANTLY and Michaela it’s just vibing to it having no idea.
- Besotted Anthony filling the entire house with tulips but Kate is pregnant again and gets nauseated by the smell and he has to get rid of it before she notices (because obviously he doesn’t want her to feel bad for not liking his gift) and find something new to surprise her.
- Colin making a thousand letters for Penelope to find around the house with love confessions but it gets out of hand when she can’t even put on her shoes without a not on it.
(actually i might write this, hold on)
• KIDS SHENANIGANS (we will be having a two year time gap, that means what? Auggie is like 5/6? Needy and Elliot will be 3/4, give us Charles and let these kids have their BRIDGERTON GENES, let them run around and pull pranks and drive their parents MAD).
• SIBLING MOMENTS (just the fact this needs to be included on the list is SHAMEFUL, but fine) Let’s have more scenes of siblings interacting. Give us more Anthony bonding with Gregory and Hyancith, give us more of Benedict understanding Anthony’s burdens and helping him, BRING DAPHNE FROM THE DEAD, show them supporting Colin’s writing career, show them being just a silly family that loves each other and fight and play and laugh!
- Like they deciding to have a scavenger hunt and forming teams or couple x couple or whatever
• IN LAW INTERACTIONS (we have four seasons and none of the in laws have EVER directly interacted with other in laws (except for John’s telling the tale about the boots to Kate, Anthony and Violet or the double date with Polin and Franjohn)
- Unfortunately we don’t have the duke, but just imagine unhinged Kate coming to him and saying “i would have duel you too” and him being like ????.
- Penelope and Kate talking about motherhood.
- Sophie and Kate bossing Benedict and Anthony around.
- Their little club with afternoon tea and every time a Bridgerton shows up it gets kicked out.
- Kate asking Sophie for her help organising balls.
- Sophie baking for the family just because she wants to.
- They attending Lady Danbury soirée and coming back WAISTED and ABC being ??? (actually I read a very good story about this and it just should be on the show).
Anyway, this was it.
I am currently listening to the Bridgerton books on audible and oh my god they are terrible, but I can’t stop listening. Not because they are good by any means but they are genuinely so bad it’s enjoyable. Like trash tv kind of enjoyable, the product is so bad I can’t stand it, but having it on in the background and then gasping when you hear the most outrageous thing is kind of enjoyable.
Plus now I get to tell people as a book reader/listener how much better the show is!
