Nat’s eyes fell to the floor immediately, refusing to meet his eyes. “…Yes,” she answered. It was soft, matter-of-fact. She knew. How could she not? There was an itching feeling within her. It was confirmed when she’d seen the reports once they were released. (That coding was no match for her decryption skills.) She knew that he was there, that he’d been the one…

But just because she knew about it didn’t mean she was in a position to tell him anything about it. Part of her didn’t even fully believe it. “Вы помните, солдат?” she breathed, voice low. Nat couldn’t allow any hope to betray her in her words, but it was all she had. The thought that he might be able to recall some details sent butterflies through her body, but she’d given up on butterflies years ago.
