Winterset (1936)
Burgess Meredith.
That’s it. That’s my one reason out of the gate for “you need to watch this one.” We know he’s always been good, and yes, this holds true. The man can carry a film.
The premise: Burgess Meredith is the son of an immigrant, who was wrongfully accused and executed for a crime he didn’t commit. As Meredith comes of age, he seeks to uncover the truth and absolve his father and family name.
Carradine offers a compelling set of opening scenes to develop the storyline. And then you have a few photographs of him with newspaper headlines reminding the viewer of Meredith’s “why” in the film.
Rewatch Factor: Even with the tragic ending, wholeheartedly yes. It’s compelling enough as a thriller with sympathetic characters.
The Carradine Factor: It may only be two scenes, but he carries the gravitas needed to shape the emotional stakes and motives for Meredith’s character. Not bad for early Carradine!
