The Run-Down on Winter Term
This week marked our first week of winter term classes. If you’re wondering what taking a winter course entails, wonder no more! We’re here to answer the most asked questions about these three week courses.
Winter term is the three week “semester” between fall and spring courses. Registration for this term begins the same time spring registration starts, and only a finite number of classes and sections are available. As all winter term classes are three weeks long, the courses are taught at a more accelerated pace. Winter classes start the first week of January and end the Friday before spring courses begin.
What is the advantage of taking winter term classes?
These classes offer both current and non-CVTC students the opportunity to complete a required course for their program if their spring and/or fall semester schedule is overloaded. It is also a way for students to partake in a pre-requisite course for the spring semester if applicable. Winter term is not a required term for students, but rather a way to get classes completed in the interim between fall and spring semesters.
Are winter term classes the same as summer classes?
Yes and no. They are similar in the sense that they are between two major semesters (spring and fall); however, summer is an eight week term. There are also a number of programs at CVTC that actually start in the summer term, whereas no programs begin during the winter term.
Can winter term classes be covered by financial aid?
Yes. Winter term is bundled with spring term financial aid. In other words, if you are getting sufficient financial aid funds to cover both your spring semester and your winter term classes, the classes should be covered fully by your financial aid. Keep in mind that taking winter courses does not expedite the refund disbursement process, and students in winter courses will still not see a refund from their financial aid until the first weeks of spring semester.
Can I still register for a winter term course?
Unfortunately, no. Students (both CVTC, and non-CVTC students) are able to register for winter term classes up until the week they begin. As these classes are accelerated, one week’s absence would result in too much missed information to successfully complete the course.
How can I find out if winter term courses would be beneficial to me in the future?
If you are a current CVTC student, meeting with your advisor is the best way to get answers regarding your enrollment and registration. Your advisor would be able to assist you with seeing which winter courses are available and which are applicable to where you currently are in your program.
So there you have it! A run-down of what the winter term is and why CVTC offers it. Bummed that you missed registration for winter term? No worries! Registration for our summer term classes open up halfway through the spring semester.
