Norman Babcock, being a medium, has the ability to see past the ink to who the ink creatures used to be and is able to communicate with/understand almost any ink creature (Excluding the Butcher Gang, who either have no souls or their's not enough mind left to communicate with.) that has a soul as if the creature is more like their regular selves again. (It was this ability, along with those of Aggie, that helped free Alice and help Susie Campbell find peace.) Including ones that are non-verbal to others. All the raspings, screams, and screechings that others hear sound like words to Norman.
On one of their excursions into Joey Drew Studios, Coraline and Norman find themselves in the Inky Abyss and face to face with none other than The Projectionist - otherwise known as the late Norman Polk. While most think that The Projectionist is completely feral, Norman is able to bond with him - much to Alice's shock and amazement and Bendy's pride. (They came down thinking The Projectionist might hurt the kids, ESPECIALLY Alice.)
