What If... European bison appears in 101 Dalmatians (1996).

If a European bison appeared in 101 Dalmatians (1996), it would likely be a brief comedic cameo rather than a major character, fitting the film's style of featuring various animals around London and the English countryside.

A quick painting of my favourite bovid. This is a male wisent, or European bison ( Bison bonasus), and I plan to paint a female and a calf too. This painting took about 1.5 hour from start to finish, and I’m really happy with that, even though I wanted to have it done in 1 hour.

Wisents:

They’re listed as vulnerable, but can be considered one of big successes of conservation: by the end of 1920′s there were no surviving wild wisents. To save the species from extinction, Polish zoologist Jan Sztolcman, inspired by  the American Bison Society, founded Międzynarodowe Towarzystwo Ochrony Żubra ( International Wisent Society) in 1923. At that time, there were only 54 wisents living in zoos around the world, and not all of them could be bred. All wisents living today are descendants of only 12 animals chosen for the breeding program.

As of 31 December 2014 there were 5553 wisents worldwide; 1608 of them living in captivity, 402 in smei-free herds, and 3543 in free roaming herds. The biggest populations of wisents live in Poland (1566 in 2015) and Belarus (1363 in 2015). Most wisents in Poland live in free roaming herds.

They are, on average, lighter than their American cousins, but taller at the shoulder, with longer tails and horns. Wisents live in small herds, usually consisting of 8 to 13 animals. Their preferred habitats are mixed forests with access to meadows, as grasses make up to 70%-90% of their diet.

There once were three subspecies, but only one survived to this day, the Lowland wisent, B. bonasus bonasus. There are however some animals with both Lowland wisent and Caucasian wisent (B. b. caucasicus) ancestry.

And they’re all cute and fluffy and adorable :D
